2018 basketball recruiting

We may have our PG. - just saw a tweet from JUCOadvocate that this player has committed to Robert Morris. I do not know if that is confirmed.

Sayveon McEwen - Shawnee Community College PG
Averaged 17 ppg, shot 40% from 3. Had offers from Kent State and Jacksonville State.

So that should do it for this class, assuming no one else left without us knowing about it.

Wouldn’t mind Ashmeade leaving if it meant adding another big man lol but if Petteway is good to go we should be fine.

Does anyone know what happened to Ashmeade? It seemed he just disappeared, once the new year began. Was he on the bench? I don't remember seeing him.

Juco PG Sayveon McEwen has committed to RMU. He had offers from 4 other D1 schools per VC. That should close the class if everyone we know about signs.

He was not on the bench, but Omari Sankofa of the PG said a few weeks ago that Ashmeade was still on the team. Maybe he was away for personal issues or academics.

I think this is the new NCAA academic redshirt/non-qualifier policy. Russell Johnson went through something similar when he was here.

How about a grad transfer?

Keep an eye on Jacquil Taylor from Purdue. He's a 6-foot-10, 240 pound forward who battled injuries as a freshman and again as a junior. He played sparingly last year as a redshirt junior.

I'd love getting Jacquil. This is fun!

I am starting to get excited about the prospects of the 2018/19 Colonials. Typically, RMU and most NEC teams are strong at the 2 and 3 positions and generally have pretty good point guards as well. If an NEC team is strong at the 1,2,3 and 4 positions that team is a very strong contender for the Conference crown and has the ability to compete with teams from better conferences. Right now RMU looks to be a team that will be solid, two deep, at the 1,2,3 and 4 positions. Of course, the 5 position is the one where NEC teams usually are not so strong, and RMU has question marks at that position. I am hopeful that David Cole takes a nice step up this coming year. He is younger than most college players that have been out of high school for two years and big men often take longer to adapt to the college game. His biggest weakness is that he gets into foul trouble too quickly. If he can develop a bit of finesse on defense so that he can be effective without fouling he can be a solid NEC post player. If Malik is healthy and able to play, he certainly can be one of the better big men in the Conference. And, we are expecting that a scholarship is still available and will be used on a big man. POTENTIALLY, the Colonials can be strong at all five positions. Go Colonials!

All good comments. Cole has had his struggles, however at our level that's common for inside players their first year or two out of high school. Pettaway will be a big lift if he's healthy.

RMU is the first to offer local sophomore F Johnny Crise. He was featured in an article about early visits to Duquesne, but RMU put up the scholarship.

Meanwhile, Tray Woodall has been officially promoted to assistant coach. So Toole will be looking for one assistant to join Woodall and Iuzzolino. Maybe a director of basketball operations, unless Urso is promoted and Toole grabs a video guy

Once again you earn your handle!

In Omari Sankofa's PG article today he says Gebrewhit "will be an academic redshirt next year and won't take the court until the 2019-20 season". As he is quoted above Kiah El will also be a "traditional student" next year. Unless someone confused the recruits, we will be down two players next year, both forwards.

That would stink if he can’t play next year as that hurts our guard depth.

I was just thinking, if Kiah El is a "traditional student" he probably won't count against our scholarships next year!

Well I knew he would not be eligible next year, but I didn't think about the scholarship aspect. Do you know if Philmon will get a scholarship next year? I'm guessing that is part of the deal.

Per the NCAA policy, an academic redshirt is on scholarship and can practice with the team but cannot participate in games. That's what Phimon will be. Kiah El is a non-qualifier, so RMU can admit him into school but he cannot be on scholarship, practice with the team, or play in games.

So RMU still has one scholarship.

Is El paying for school himself next year?

Cuz if so could he practice as a “walk-on”?

Or I guess that would probably take a year of eligibility? Idk...

I count 2 slots open for next year, unless Ashmeade retains his scholarship.

He cannot practice with the team in any capacity. He is not eligible.

He has to pay his own way, but will likely be able to get some financial help through aid and grants like any other student.

Gebrewhit will be an academic redshirt his freshman year. That's disappointing, but I guess that is a big part of the reason his bigger-time offers apparently did not hold up.

Anyone hear any rumors about where the final scholarship might go? They've made a few offers to underclassmen but no news on finalizing the class.
