Any truth to the rumor on the web that Andy is interviewing on campus this week?

Would Marshall be a step up?!

http://blogs.charlestondailymail.com/marshall/2014/04/13/time-is-a-flat-circle/ according to this site, he will interview there.

Marshall might be a step up in pay, but it's still a one-bid league.

Toole is on campus today doing an interview with a local TV station. That doesn't rule out anything happening later this week, but it's also Easter Weekend coming up. I'm not sure as to the accuracy of this report, but there's been very little buzz between Toole and Marshall so far. His name has been thrown around by some local writers, but that's about it.

For some comparisons, here's what Marshall might be bringing to the table if Toole is indeed involved.

Tom Herrion's contract was $400,000 per year. As a public school, those numbers are available. Robert Morris doesn't release contract info as a private school, but according to the last available school tax documents, Toole made $189,478 in the 2011 fiscal year. He's received additional bonuses and a new contract since then, so it's safe to say that he's north of $200k on his current deal.

When Mike Rice signed his contract extension just before he went to Rutgers, he was approaching and potentially surpassing $300k, according to tax documents. That is probably approaching the upper limit for Robert Morris, somewhere in the $300k range.

As a whole, Marshall spent about $25 million - or $10 million more than RMU - on athletics in 2012-13. That includes $2.3 million on basketball, compared to $1.3 million on hoops for RMU.

In terms of conference comparison, Tulsa won the Conference USA title and was a 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. With Memphis now a member of the AAC, the league is probably an upper-tier one-bid league for the foreseeable future. The league has TV deals with CBS Sports Network, including its championship game, and Fox Sports 1, though the latter is mostly for football.

In terms of facilities, Marshall plays in the Cam Henderson Center, a 9,000+ seat arena built in 1981.

It's an interesting comparison to a school like Robert Morris. On the one hand, Marshall is a step higher in terms of conference profile (thanks in large part to football) and having a little more in terms of resources. That's attractive to anyone.

On the other hand, it's still a one-bid league, and it's a league that is far from stable lately. It seems to be growing with the additions of ODU, Charlotte and Western Kentucky, but it's had a ton of movement thanks to conference realignment. With Memphis gone, odds are it stays a one-bid league.

It's also not in Toole's ideal recruiting network, as C-USA is mostly in the South and Midwest now. If he does indeed interview, it's going to be interesting to see what develops.

An added wrinkle:
Toole and RMU are hosting at least two recruits on Friday. So if he is indeed interviewing, then it'll be Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday in Huntington. I can confirm he didn't interview today, as he was on campus meeting with a local TV station.

Several questions: How old is Toole's son? Could his comfortability with the Pittsburgh area make it hard to leave? Is RMU regarded enough around the region for him to make a direct jump to the AAC or Big East without having to accept a gateway job, like Marshall, to get him there with continued success at RMU?

It would be extremely rare for a coach to go directly from the NEC to a power conference. Obviously Mike Rice went from RMU to Rutgers, but he had been an assistant at high level programs, Toole has never been on the staff of a high level program. Toole is an east coast guy, he and his family seem to be happy in Pittsburgh. Huntington WV might require some adjustment. Toole stated that he will only leave for a great job. He does not want to leave a good job at age 33, where his family is happy, for a job where he could be unemployed by age 37. Marshall is a football school, it has gone through a lot of coaches. Toole likely needs a "gateway job" before he reaches the big time, but it has to be a gateway job where he believes he can have great success in order to allow for the next step. The fact that the Marshall administration has been dragging their feet to fill the position does not bode well for the next coach. Apparently they have been hoping the LA Lakers coach will take the job. Really! After coaching the LA Lakers, even though he may get fired, he would move to Huntington to coach Marshall??? You have got to be kidding me!

Dereksoom, family considerations will absolutely be a part of this and any vacancy with Toole.

His son, Ryan, is about a year and a half old. Toole and his wife also just announced recently that they're expecting another addition.

Toole's smart. He knows - and he's stated publicly - how dangerous it is to start jumping job to job to advance. Sometimes you're better off staying put, and he's said that much. He loves it at Robert Morris, especially the administrative support. There would be a lot to hold him at RMU.

I've always thought that an A-10 job, or a gig like Temple in the AAC, would be what ultimately pulls him away. We'll see.

Report out now that Toole will not be interviewing. Not sure if he was originally scheduled to and something has changed, or if the earlier report was wrong.

Either way, sounds like he's not in the picture for Marshall.

Interesting. Colin Dunlap says he is not interviewing, but some Marshall guys say he is one of 4 "confirmed" interviews?

I guess Colin being local has ties to Toole, but who knows he is kind of a muckraker

The Twitter account behind the four confirmed interviews report hasn't been that accurate so far.

And Dunlap's report came out afterward. I'd say his report is the freshest

Today Hoopdirt.com is reporting - The "hot" name now at Marshall is Robert Morris head coach Andy Toole.

Marshall has hired Dan D'antoni.

Shifting gears - Andrew - any further recruiting news? Thanks!

All is quiet for now. After Easter, many coaches across the country are prepping for the Jam Fest recruiting event here in Pittsburgh. It's hosted by the Hoop Group (run now by Mike Rice) and is part of the only live recruiting weekend until summer.

I expect some news following the event, as there is also a big JuCo showcase coming up. After all that we should have a clearer picture.

I thought Jamfest already started? After Easter? Isnt it already after Easter?

Maybe time for you to get some sleep

"After Easter" was referring to this past weekend (April 18-20) through this week. Following the visits at the beginning of the weekend (Friday into Saturday morning), most coaches across the country shifted focus a little bit to prepping for the upcoming weekend (April 25-27), since it's the lone live recruiting period until the summer. That means it is incredibly valuable, and many of the coaches will be here in Pittsburgh.

No, Jamfest has not started. It starts tonight (Friday) and runs through the weekend at high schools around the area. There are a ton of prospects competing and probably a couple hundred college coaches expected to scope it all out.
