Can finally confirm that OC/QB Coach Darrin Hicks has been fired.

A couple thoughts on this .....

1) It was a matter of time after his play calling duties were taken away.
2) If you look at the QB development under Coach Hicks ... Well there really wasnt any. Luke Brumbaugh was last years starter and didn't perform then you throw in Abbott who some might argue performed well enough to be given another shot but lets not forget he only won one game as a starter. Fast forward to this year and you really see a lack of development. I do however think Matt Barr is the answer at QB if you look at the last three weeks of the season when play calling was taken away from Coach Hicks Matt was Awarded NEC Rookie of the week twice. Now im not sure if there was some other coaching going on behind closed doors or what not but clearly something changed.

3) I would expect to see some attrition to this years roster. Hate speculating on names but one could assume Tyler Brown with his connection to Coach Hicks will look elsewhere.

Until I hear more ....

I agree that brown has potential, but he wasn't even playing wuarterback towards the end of the season. He was playing H back. Switched his position towards the end of the year

Sadly, I think several players have been waiting for this so they can utilize the one time transfer clause. That said, RMU needs to do some heavy recruiting and fast. Some may disagree, but losing Stock is going to put a considerable dent in the defense for 2016. Mike is an extraordinary athlete and (in my opinion) was the fuel that fired RMU's defense this year. A huge loss there.

I also have to share, that in my humble opinion, RMU had a diamond in the rough in Marcus Prather as QB. His skill, talent and ability was never fully recognized or brought to the fore. Prather more than proved himself in the commanding come from behind win against Wagner in the final few minutes the season before last. In addition, Prather and Buss (in particular) had great chemistry on the practice field and it would have been very exciting to see them working together.

Trust is vital. Athletes need to be able to trust that the decisions their Coaches make have their best interests and the best interests of their TEAM in mind. I hope that someone grabs the wheel and very quickly begins rebuilding and repairing anything and everything that was damaged or broken. There are some excellent Coaches at RMU and hopefully they can all pull together to build a strong and more solid foundation for the Colonials to move forward from than ever before.

I think we all saw this coming. Hicks was a buddy of Banny brought in. His hands were tied. He had to make changes or risk losing his team and his staff. I agree that the coaches need to focus on recruiting and getting the right talent in as they could be in the position to really challenge for the NEC title in 2016.

Banny needs to open up the interview process big time. Last time, there was not much of an interview process and Hicks was blessed in as the new OC.
I could think of a few names but until the change was been confirmed, I'll hold off on my thoughts officially.

Team meeting at 4pm today so maybe by tonight we should get something official if there are any changes.

No matter how loyal or trustworthy Coach Hicks seemed to be to Coach B., or how much he valued his D-III all-conference selections as an offensive lineman at W&J, he was a high-risk hire.

Football programs need consistency for success, and Coach Hicks has never been at any job long enough to create consistency. Having coached at 10 schools over 18 years, his average tenure has been only 1.8 years. That's not enough time to recruit, evaluate, train, retain, and reload a successful team. While coaches sometimes jump from one program to another as a learning experience early in their career, by the time one reaches the OC level, such behavior should be rare and easily-explained.

In the business world, such a resume for a managerial position would quickly end up in the trash, as so many job changes is a red flag about some combination of performance, ability, behavior, and loyalty.

I wish Coach Hicks all the best in his new endeavors, but hope Coach B. gets good support in recruiting and choosing his replacement. The right hire (someone with solid DI experience at successful programs or a star from a D2 powerhouse) should be able to take this team to the next level.

RMU is an up-and-coming University - we need our football program to be so as well.

I totally agree with how much stock meant to that defense, nobody else meant more and anybody watching would say that he was the engine. My gut feeling says its a huge loss. But the more I think about it, they should be alright. All 4 defensive backs are returning starters, Richards and smigiera are each 2 year starters. Both outside linebackers are back, kimani smith and jimmy Masson. Kimani should be healthy by next season after having a blood clot this year. I think the defense actually lost a half step when he went out this year. Zamiska is a returning starter, fenwick played a lot as his backup. And even though they're losijg Forrest madon as well, Ryan Lewis and Austin trgovich both started a handful of games this year and played very well. With all that experienxe returning combined with farison running it all again, this defense should be primed for another great year. As far as the offense goes, barr showed what he was capable of when healthy. Blake and owens hve the potential to be the best 1-2 combination of backs in the NEC next season. Buss will only grow on his stellar season and lamica can make big plays, especially on jump balls. If the offensive line can get sorted out for next season, and the play calling is better with hicks gone, I don't see why this team can't compete for the NEC title. Heck, this year they played south dakota state to halftime until they're qb got hurt, almost held on to beat a solid ysu team, and lost on a field goal with under 2 minutes to fcs playoff dayton. All the pieces are in place for a great run next season!

I agree that losing a combination of Stock and Nick Faraci will hurt in terms of a leadership standpoint. Look for Adam Wollett and Tank Waters & Joe Uhatafe to get the first look at replacing Stock and Tkach. If you ask me it will be Wollett & Uhatafe starting in the middle next season. After that the defense doesnt worry me. Losing Forrest will hurt a bit from a production standpoint but look for amir fenwick, zach zamiska, ryan lewis, Turk, & 2016 big time recruit chris stanford to fill the void there. In the Secondary you have arguably four all league players. Even though Richards play toward the end of the season slipped off if you ask me.

Offensively, Now here comes the huge questions Mark

1) Who's calling plays -
A) Does Coach Banaszak stick with Richardson and bring in a QB Coach ?
B) Does a switching Coach Hurley from DB's to QB's make sense ? Lets not forget how good of a QB Hurley was at Syracuse.
C) Bring in a OC/QB's coach outside the program ? Does a name like Rich DeMaio make sense former RMU Player QB Coach OC at Westminster ?

2) Will the Real Ram Owens please Stand up
Anyone get the feeling that this season is a make or break year for Ram ? With the emergence of Cole Blake and the excited yet limited action we've seen from Dante Satcher. Could carries be sifted away from the big bruiser owens ?

3) OL
Who replaces Max Robertson who doesnt get enough credit on these boards from switching to LT this year after being a Guard during his career. Hopefully we see some young guys step up like Gio DeLorea and Krys Diaz.

Just a couple thoughts ........

My Answer -> You have to bring a QB coach in. Barr needs more work as do the other QBs. I hope that Banaszak learned his lesson with Hicks. Just don't appointment someone as your next OC. Open the job and bring in the best individual for the job. Richardson can throw his hat in the ring. The offensive scheme from Hick's was not bad, just the play calling was puzzling. Run-Run then a 2 yard pattern on 3rd and long. We saw some progress with Richardson but that SFU game hurt big time. SFU loaded up the box to stop the run against RMU and still they were afraid to throw the ball.

I think Richardson stays as OL and Recruiting Coordinator. Maybe he gains more influence with the run game.

DeMaio could too throw his hat in the ring.

In no real order, here is who I could see going for the OC position at RMU:

1. Richardson - knows the team but sometimes you need new ideas outside of the current program.
2. DeMaio - sure why not.
3. Monz - has had good success at RMU and wanted to be the OC prior to Hicks but Banaszak wanted Hicks. Not sure if this bridge for Monz has been burnt at RMU.
4. Tanner Engstran - WHO??? Asst. Head Coach/Off. Coor/QB Coach at San Diego. I have heard that this individual could be an ideal OC at RMU. He would open up the West Coast recruiting for RMU. He steps in and taking over the O and coaching the QBs. Since being named the offensive coordinator at USD before the 2011 season, the Toreros have garnered a record of 34-11, including 28-4 in conference games and three conference championships.

And these are just some names. RMU is going to have to treat this position just like recruiting high school and jucos. You are going to have to sell the program and get the right individual in. This hire by RMU could either take RMU back into the NEC title picture over the next several years or the program is again at the bottom of the NEC looking up.

Heading into 2016, Cole Blake is your clear #1 RB. But Owens is right behind him. I hope that the new OC takes note that he will have a nice problem to have. Two top tier RBs. I would like to see Barr in the shotgun with Blake on one side and Owens on the other. Lamica split out to the left. Slot to the Right with Buss and another WR.

There are a few options for Richardson but it all depends on the work these players put in the offseason, Spring Ball and over the summer.

Option 1:
Lucian to LT
Riley Metheney to C

Option 2:
Gio De Loera to LT
Lucian to C

Option 3:
Mike Lamb to LT
Drew Garbenis to RT
Lucian to C

But my one question from the season...what the hell happen to Jamison Williams? Listed as a starter for the Dayton game and YSU...never saw him again take the field!! Was he hurt? In the dog-house?

If RMU went with Option 3 for the OL, that OL is huge.
Then add back Williams to your WRs. You have Lamica at 6'4", Williams at 6'3", Buss your NEC ROY, Ben Line smashing people with Cole Blake and your 6'4" So. QB in Barr.

That is a lineup that rivals many top FCS programs. The potential is there. The coaches need to work to get these players on the field & producing.

Riley Metheney will not be a starter on the offensive line next year when the season opens you can take that to the bank. From the games and limited practice I was able to attend kid just didn't impress me but who knows what can happen.

LT- Gio DeLoera, Garbs, Lucian,
LG- Blake Chamblis, Diaz
C-Lucian, Metheney (Even though I believe you would see some shuffling before he goes in)
RG- Josh Theil, Diaz, Freshman
RT- Mike Lamb, Fennel, Freshman

Ian Bjuro is gonna be high on that depth chart, possibly starting left tackle next year. He was a 3 star juco transfer who came from Louisiana lafayette and had to have knee surgery so he missed this past season. He will back healthy for spring ball I believe

Only reason i did not include Bjuro on my list is he is such an uncertainty. I know there were high hopes for him coming into last season however he only practiced for roughly a week or so during camp. To me he is to much of a question mark to count on right now.

Understood, and after watching fennells highlights, I wouldn't be shocked to see Lucian at left tackle and him at center if he can pick up the system fairly quick. He played everywhere on the line at upper saint Clair

Just wondering, since most of you guys are closer to the program than I am, is it confirmed that Coach Hicks is out at RMU? I don't believe RMU has officially announced it, although there is probably no reason for the athletic department to announce the departure of an assistant coach.

Was told that it's going to happen but nothing will be official until the end of December (must mean he is getting paid through the end of the year).
Hicks has already been removed from the Coaches page: http://rmucolonials.com/coaches.aspx?path=football&

It will be interesting to see who they hire. This is a very important hire for Banny. With the talent coming back, he can't afford to miss again on a QB coach and OC.

Hey Original_RMC, you just pulling names out of your a**? Tanner Engstran of San Diego? How did you come up with him? He may be a great coach, but, come on man, he is living in the sunshine in San Diego! Unless he is married to someone from Pittsburgh, and she wants to be closer to family, I don't see that one happening. How about you? You played QB, then became a Hall of Fame lineman, you know offense as well as anyone. I'm giving Coach Banny a call, the obvious candidate is right under his nose, or in the radio broadcast room. You can bring Shovlin along as QB coach.

Interesting that the athletic department removed Coach Hicks already from the official website. Generally, asst. coaching changes and such don't get updated so quickly.

Tanner Engstran is name I got from another alumni who believes he would have been the ideal candidate the 1st time around. I don't know if there is interest there to move to Pittsburgh. But if I'm Banny, I'm reaching out to those former Colonials who know those within the coaching world. Get some names and make some calls.
It's just like recruiting right? You don't know if a kid from California would be interested in coming to Pittsburgh. But look at Donald Dorsey, J.T. Kirk and Chris Beene. They all came from Cali. I know coaches are different as you have a family to think about.
I believe its at least worth a phone call to Tanner from Banny.

Can anyone confirm that 2 current players requested releases from the program and got them this week?

I know better than to mention names. Has anyone heard about this?

There are 2 currently, and once the spring semester starts in February we will know of anymore that won't be back

What I am hearing is that there are two upperclassmen and potentially a handful of younger players looking to move on.

I've pretty much confirmed 2 departures. In addition, 2 Freshman, 1 Sophomore and a Junior seem to be very much on the fence and are leaning toward leaving. Sure hope someone is doing some damage control. Is the Staff out recruiting this week? Anyone notable on the radar?

I am not sure if anybody on the radar, I just know the wpial guys that were given offers and committed. I think coach Coleman is headed to DC this week or next week to do recruiting down there. With 6 commits already, im not sure how much money is left. were only losing a few scholarship seniors
