RMU hosting Lucky Jones's former teammate

To be on Bob Hurley's good side as a college coach is like having access to a gold mine. While the major programs are after studs like Kyle Anderson, even small schools can benefit from a good relationship with the Hall of Fame head coach at St. Anthony High School in New Jersey.

Robert Morris picked up Lucky Jones as a late qualifier last year, though they had recruited Jones heavily prior to the summer. That connection could help them again this year.

Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop tweeted Thursday night that RMU is hosting 2012 forward Jerome Frink. The St. Anthony product is 6-foot-6, 205 pounds and scored 26 points with 13 rebounds in the state title game and Tournament of Champions final.

As of early March, Frink listed his recruiting interest as James Madison, Radford, Rhode Island, CCSU, FIU, Jacksonville, FDU, Quinnipiac & Georgia State.

But for him to use one of his five official visits on Robert Morris certainly says something about where he views the Colonials. He's an all-state caliber player on a team that has not lost a game since March of 2010. That's two years and over 60+ wins of not losing.

Frink has had some big games this year, as evidenced by his play in the TOC final, but he's flown under the radar with Anderson on the roster. But Frink's earned a reputation for doing a lot of the dirty work underneath to take the pressure off of Anderson inside, crashing the boards and scoring underneath.

So what does this all mean for Robert Morris? Well, the Colonials have one scholarship to give. Andrew Toole has said he'd like a scorer to take the pressure off of Coron Williams and Velton Jones, and he'd like to improve his team's ability to rebound. In a sense, Frink accomplishes both of those tasks, though he's definitely more of an inside presence.

What this likely indicates is Darren Washington's departure, though that is far from certain.

We'll closely monitor how this goes for Frink.

This may not be it for Robert Morris and St. Anthony's, either. The Colonials have reportedly been keeping an eye on 2013 point guard Hallice Cooke, but he may shoot past the Colonials to the high major level.

Spring Practice Report - 4/2/2012

We are a week into spring ball and one thing is starting to become clear: Individual drills are relatively even, but when it comes time to go 11-on-11, the defense is ahead of the offense.

Coaches always say that's the case at this point in the year, but it's especially true for Robert Morris. The defense swallows the offensive line on most run plays, and there's a solid pass rush on passing downs. Much of the push seems to be coming from the linebackers, which is always a good sign. That unit is the heart and soul of the defense, and it's the lynch-pin in the 3-4 defense.

But the entire unit has been strong. Clay Ilkin and Antwan Eddie look sharp at corner, while Cameron Chadwick and D.J. Myers have been solid in pass coverage and physical in run support.

As good as the 2010 offense was at times, that unit rode the defense, sparked by guys like Alex DiMichele, Elias Navarro, and Mike Landers. Odds are if Robert Morris is going to do damage in the Northeast Conference, the defense will have a lot to say about it.

QUICK HITS:
- The groupings were a bit jumbled up because of some absences and early departures. Monday seems to be class day for a chunk of the team, both with early classes during practice and night classes forcing guys to check out early. But there were some additional injuries from over the weekend that left the Colonials mixing things together. For a full list of absent players, check out the list below.

- With Rickeem Jackson sidelined Monday, Garrett Piekarski, Duane Mitchell, and Dustin Lowman got a little bit more of a chance to shine. While all had their moments, Mitchell has become a bit of a camp star with his transition from running back. At 6-foot-1, he has excellent size (part of the reason he was moved from the backfield), and he's already using it to his advantage. Twice he out-positioned D.J. Myers to haul in a long pass, even though Myers got a hand on the ball. In 11-on-11 drills, he made a nice double move to get wide open on the sideline for a touchdown pass. As Myers quipped at one point, "Today's just not my day."

No, it was Mitchell's. He has a ways to go yet, but his athleticism and hands seem to be ready to go. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him become a heavy part of the mix by the end of fall training camp.

- With Grayling Sanders sitting out, Deontae Howard and Justin Brooks got more carries. It's becoming clear those two are solidly behind Sanders, although Howard still gets a fair number of reps as the No. 2 guy. The other interesting development at running back is the use of William Quarles. Easily the smallest guy on the field, he doesn't get many touches on handoffs. But he's a threat in the passing game out of the backfield.

- Clay Ilkin picked off one pass in passing drills, but then dropped another sure-fire pick, much to the dismay of the defensive backs.

- It looks like Donte Jeter and Evan Taylor are the only in-house options for punt returns. A couple of the freshmen may get a look, but odds are one of those two is returning kicks at North Dakota State.

Did Not Practice: Nick Groat, Connor Sullivan, Andrew Douglass, Nolan Nearhoof and Cory Nolton remained out for Robert Morris. They were joined on the sideline by Rickeem Jackson, Grayling Sanders and Willie Pruitt, while Brad Banas arrived late from class. Also absent were Farren Mason and Forrest Mason. RJ Cook returned to practice but was limited.

Spring Practice Report - 3/30/2012

At this stage of a football season, it's hard to examine how good a team might be as a whole. First off, it's spring. It's about installing new wrinkles, going over plays again, putting new guys in different spots, etc.

Second, the focus is very much on individual drills and teaching. That might take the form in larger drills, leading up to end-of-practice sessions of 11-on-11. But individual progress is the major component of spring. Friday's practice had a few moments where individuals had the chance to shine.

Safety D.J Myers made the first impression, forcing three interceptions before the team even got to 7-on-7, 9-on-7 drills. He picked one pass in receiver/defensive back drills, tipped another pass that ended up being picked, and then intercepted a pass on one-on-one drills. All told, not a bad day's work.

On the other side of the ball, wide receiver Rickeem Jackson is just a cut above the rest. That's no knock on the other receivers, but Jackson's body control and hands are just so impressive. He hauled in several passes over top of defenders (even as receives coach Bob Morris admonished Jackson to catch one pass at a higher point, rather than on his hip).

One thing is also obvious - the quarterbacks know where Jackson likes to get the ball. That comes with time. As Jeff Sinclair mentioned in a post-practice conversation (which you can read more of on Sunday), he had three years to work with Anthony Coleman and Shadrae King, two years with Jamie Cobb. That's a lot of practice repetitions, not to mention just casually throwing the ball around over the summer.

TWO DEEP DEPTH CHART
Here's how they lined up on Friday.

Quarterback - Jeff Sinclair, Matt Layman
Running back - Grayling Sanders, Deontae Howard
Fullback - Ryan Thermil, A.J. Reed
Wide Receiver - Rickeem Jackson, Donte Jeter
Wide Receiver - Quinton Pirl, Chad Dawgiello
Tight End - Paul Evans, Andrew Smith
Left Tackle - A.J. Dalton, Dylan Knight
Left Guard - Vince Mongelluzzo, Alex Kirsch
Center - Nick Faraci, Cory Pitkavish
Right Guard - Jon Hill, Willie Pruitt
Right Tackle - Nate Hargraves, Nate Lojek

Defensive end - Steve Mitchell, A.J. Holderman
Defensive tackle - Farren Mason/Sam Miller, Henry Jartu
Defensive end - Chris Thompkins, Forrest Mason
Outside linebacker - Brad Banas, Mark Centofanti
Inside linebacker - Kyle Cooper, Dan Mignogna
Inside linebacker - Mike Cook, Matthew Fox
Outside linebacker - Sanchez Faugue, Adrian Perez
Corner back - Clay Ilkin, Zach Washington
Safety - Cameron Chadwick, Ben Ridgeley
Safety - D.J. Myers, Eric Lowry
Corner back - Antwan Eddie, Evan Taylor

QUICK HITS:
- Defensive tackle Henry Jartu has a few bodies in front of him on the depth chart, but it's clear why the coaching staff likes him. His motor doesn't stop. The three guys in front of him - R.J. Cook, Sam Miller, Farren Mason - are all entering their final year of eligibility, so expect Jartu to get some spot work to make sure he gets experience. He could also be spotted in where he can take advantage of his talents. He stays so low to the ground that he's able to undercut offensive linemen. As he expands his repertoire of moves, he could be a dangerous tackle.

- The defense seemed to be out for blood today. Clay Ilkin pulled up a bit but was ready to bring the wood on a receiver along the sideline. Others weren't so lucky. Linebacker Kyle Cooper popped a few shoulder pads in 7-on-7 drills, and safety Cameron Chadwick hammered wide receiver Chad Dawgiello when he crossed over the middle.

- Dawgiello popped right back up, and he's emerged as the No. 4 receiver. Joe Walton likes to mix his receivers, so 5-6 should get playing time, but he focuses most of his rotation on a top four. Right now, Dawgiello has separated himself as being in the top four, alongside Jackson, Donte Jeter, and Quinton Pirl. Jackson and Jeter are the potential big play guys, and Pirl is a bit reminiscent of former receiver Chris Kozak - just efficient and knowledgeable about everything. But Dawgiello has a bit of speed, and his lanky size allows him to use his body to block out defensive backs. If he harnesses that, he could be an interesting weapon for the Colonials.

Did not practice: Sitting out were the usual suspects again, as Connor Sullivan, R.J. Cook, Nolan Nearhoof, Nick Groat, and Andrew Douglass all did not dress. Cory Nolton was also missing in action.

Spring Practice Report - 3/29/2012

Maybe it was the physicality. Maybe it's the push to erase last year's horrible memory. Maybe it's the competition.

Whatever the case, the intensity went up a couple notches for Thursday's practice.

Competition is the name of the game in spring practice this year. There seems to be a focus on the coaches knowing what they have out of the returners so they can put some of the incoming freshmen in the right position battles once fall camp opens up. Nowhere is that more evident than with the linebackers and defensive backs.

The starters are likely set in some capacity. Kyle Cooper and Mike Cook should start at MLB, with Brad Banas locked in at OLB. One of either Sanchez Faugue or Andrew Douglass will start at the other OLB spot. Safeties D.J Myers and Cameron Chadwick probably aren't in danger of losing their spots, either. The staff has also been high on Antwan Eddie at corner, and he earned a couple starts there last season as a true freshman.

It's the depth that makes things interesting. Clay Ilkin went from getting just a couple mop-up appearances last season to starter. He's worked heavily with the first unit. But part of the intrigue in the secondary is the return of Malik Johnson and Evan Taylor from injury. Taylor's been worked into the rotation more, and it looked like he was getting a fair number of second team reps Thursday. After working some at corner on Monday, Johnson was working at safety. Factor in returning contributors like Eric Lowry, Ben Ridgeley and others, and it's wide open in the secondary.

The same is true at linebacker. Behind the starters, you have a mix of probably nine players who could emerge as quality back-ups for this season. And they're all being rotated in. Outside of a couple units working together, there's been little rhythm to the lineup shuffles.

Thursday, it looked like Gentry White and Matthew Fox had moved into the second most reps at certain linebacker spots. Friday could be different. It's definitely an area to watch.

TWO DEEP DEPTH CHART
Here's how they lined up on Thursday.

Quarterback - Jeff Sinclair, Matt Layman
Running back - Grayling Sanders, Deontae Howard
Fullback - Ryan Thermil, A.J. Reed
Wide Receiver - Rickeem Jackson, Chad Dawgiello
Wide Receiver - Donte Jeter, Quinton Pirl
Tight End - Paul Evans, Andrew Smith
Left Tackle - A.J. Dalton, Nate Lojek
Left Guard - Vince Mongelluzzo, Willie Pruitt
Center - Nick Faraci, Cory Pitkavish
Right Guard - Jon Hill, Alex Kirsch
Right Tackle - Nate Hargraves, Dylan Knight

Defensive end - Steve Mitchell, A.J. Holderman
Defensive tackle - Farren Mason/Sam Miller, Henry Jartu
Defensive end - Chris Thompkins, T.J. Matrascia
Outside linebacker - Brad Banas, Mark Centofanti
Inside linebacker - Kyle Cooper, Dan Mignogna
Inside linebacker - Mike Cook, Matthew Fox
Outside linebacker - Sanchez Faugue, Gentry White
Corner back - Clay Ilkin, Zach Washington
Safety - Cameron Chadwick, Ben Ridgeley
Safety - D.J. Myers, Eric Lowry
Corner back - Antwan Eddie, Evan Taylor

PRACTICE NOTES
Hill Moves Inside: After starting last season at right tackle, Jon Hill is at a new position. The converted defensive end has moved to right guard, where he's been working with the first team. Hill's used to plugging away on the line, and now he's working on technique. He also still has some of the aggressiveness left over from being on the defensive side of the ball. The goal will be to harness that aggression so that it results in pancake blocks, rather than mental or physical mistakes.

Arms Loss: Robert Morris has just two quarterbacks in camp - Jeff Sinclair and Matt Layman - which has put the burden on the coaches to provide passes in situations. Quarterbacks coach Camdin Crouse is a natural fit, but in defensive drills, they've had to lean on Bill Hurley. The good news? The reps are guaranteed for Sinclair and Layman, giving them plenty of time to work on things.

Nolton to tight end: After three years at defensive end, Cory Nolton has a new position. Nolton became the team's fourth tight end, and he's showcased a crispness to his routes. Everything else is still catching up, but he could potentially be a blocking tight end for the Colonials in their three tight end sets.

Mitchell catching on: Another position move has been former running back Duane Mitchell. Now at wide receiver, Mitchell is still figuring out route patterns, moves, and the intricacies of being a college receiver. But he's incredibly athletic and he has good hands. He's caught on fairly rapidly, and he could work his way into the rotation by week one.

Mongelluzzo bulks up: It was a bit of a surprise when former tight end Vince Mongelluzzo began practicing at left guard last season. It was even more of a surprise when he took over as the starter. But Mongelluzzo was one of the best blockers, and at 6-foot-3, he had the frame to move inside. Now he's added the weight. Mongelluzzo has added 20-25 pounds, and it's noticeable. But he hasn't lost a step, and the staff has been using his technique as examples for some of the other linemen.

Replacing A.C.: One of the major tasks for Robert Morris that may slip under the radar is replacing Anthony Coleman as the team's return specialist. Coleman was locked into that spot for the last three years, but with his graduation, Robert Morris suddenly needs a threat back deep. A couple freshmen could emerge, but for the time being, three players are getting looks. Donte Jeter seems the likely candidate with his speed and agility, plus he was the de facto backup last season. Evan Taylor will also get looks; he was given a few punt return opportunities two years ago as a freshman and likely would have gotten more last year had he not missed the season with an injury. The surprise, to me, was seeing Antwan Eddie working on fielding kicks today. That's simply because he's not one that I've ever seen receive a look there in the past. But it's likely a spot that isn't resolved until the final week of fall camp.

New look for Thermil: While others - Duane Mitchell, Keith O'Kelly - have been moved out of the running back room, the group did get an addition over the winter. Former linebacker Ryan Thermil has moved to fullback, and he's making an impact. He's a sturdy 5-foot-10, 240 pounds, and combined with the physical play of likely starter Grayling Sanders, could represent one half of the most punishing ground game in the NEC. Thermil will likely still work behind Nick Groat, but he got first team reps today and looked good for only working at the position for his fourth practice.

Numbers game: WR Donte Jeter is now wearing No. 3, DL A.J. Holderman has taken No. 94, DE T.J. Matrascia is wearing No. 46, K/P Hunter Khaleghi has No. 77, K/P Drew Krall is back to No. 25, MLB Mike Cook is now No. 31,

Did not participate: Defensive end Connor Sullivan, defensive end Nolan Nearhoof, defensive tackle R.J. Cook, linebacker Andrew Douglass, fullback Nick Groat and offensive lineman Ethan Mengle were among those who did not participate.

Tight end Tyler Digby is involved with lacrosse and will not participate much this spring, if at all.

Spring Practice Report - 3/26/2012

Robert Morris was back on the football field for the first time since the season ending loss to Duquesne in November. Monday began spring practice for the Colonials, and it's a program looking to rebound from a program worst 2-9 record in 2011.

Changes are abound. There is a slimmer roster, with the university having trimmed the Junior Varsity squad from the program. There are holes, with job openings available on offense and defense. Longtime assistant coach Scott Benzel left for St. Francis, giving Bill Hurley more duties coaching the secondary.

There have been some defections, as well. Starting corner Antwan Smith continued his college-hopping, leaving Robert Morris after just one season. Multiple freshmen transferred after sitting last season. And longtime starters, such as tight end Shadrae King and offensive linemen Logan Miles and Brad Rodgers have graduated.

Many of the new faces won't make their first appearance until August. But several are on campus already, and over the course of the next couple weeks, we'll catch up with them and see how they're working into the system.

There are also some key returnees from injury. Quarterback Jeff Sinclair is healthy after missing the last few games of the season with a knee injury. Defensive backs Evan Taylor and Malik Johnson are healthy after missing the entire season.

TWO DEEP DEPTH CHART
Here's how they lined up and took repetitions on the first day of practice.

Quarterback - Jeff Sinclair, Matt Layman
Running back - Grayling Sanders, Deontae Howard
Fullback - Nick Groat, A.J. Reed
Wide Receiver - Rickeem Jackson, Chad Dawgiello
Wide Receiver - Quinton Pirl, Dustin Lowman
Tight End - Paul Evans, Andrew Smith
Left Tackle - A.J. Dalton, Nate Lojek
Left Guard - Vince Mongelluzzo, Willie Pruitt
Center - Nick Faraci, Paul Pavlinich
Right Guard - Alex Kirsch, Cory Pitkavish
Right Tackle - Nate Hargraves, Dylan Knight

Defensive end - Steve Mitchell, A.J. Holderman
Defensive tackle - R.J. Cook, Farren Mason, Sam Miller
Defensive end - Chris Thompkins, T.J. Matrascia
Outside linebacker - Brad Banas, Mark Centofanti
Inside linebacker - Kyle Cooper, Dan Mignogna
Inside linebacker - Mike Cook
Outside linebacker - Sanchez Faugue, Andrew Douglass
Corner back - Clay Ilkin, Malik Johnson
Safety - Cameron Chadwick, Ben Ridgeley
Safety - D.J. Myers, Eric Lowry
Corner back - Antwan Eddie, Zach Washington

PRACTICE NOTES
Eye on the line: With three key players graduating off the line, the battle for starting jobs on the line will be something to watch up until the season opener against North Dakota State. The early lineup holds no surprises. Vince Mongelluzzo retained his starting spot at left guard after taking over for the now-graduated Brian Bevilacqua down the stretch last season. Alex Kirsch, who was a back-up at multiple positions last season, has moved into the starting spot at right guard. And sophomore Nick Faraci, who started working at center late last year, has the early spot there.

Of those jobs, the thinking is Faraci and Kirsch are probably at the most risk to incoming challengers. Faraci is new to center, while Mongelluzzo has game tape and experience at guard, something Kirsch doesn't. It'll be harder to unseat Monguelluzzo or the two returning starting tackles than it would Kirsch. But it's all about knowledge and play on the field, and the entire unit will get a good chance to showcase what it can do in spring practice.

Two quarterbacks? Only Jeff Sinclair and Matt Layman dressed for the first day of practice. If Andrew Dini and Jake Bolan didn't come back as expected, it's going to open up the competition for freshmen Derik Abbott and Mike DeBaugh when they come in. Robert Morris had hoped to redshirt Layman this year

Position and number changes: A couple guys have switched positions, most notably Duane Mitchell. The opening day starter at running back, Mitchell is now wearing No. 7 and playing wide receiver. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, he was a little tall for running back, even at fullback. With a wide open competition at receiver, the Colonials can use his size. Spring practice is the perfect chance for Mitchell to get into the flow.

We'll continue to track the other changes, but the early tracking is tough without an updated roster. There are over a dozen uniform number changes, coupled with a number of freshmen leaving the program. Over the next week, we hope to get everything tracked down. But a couple number changes of note: Wide receiver Rickeem Jackson is now wearing No. 81, potential starting corner Antwan Eddie has taken No. 6, running back Grayling Sanders is wearing No. 13, new tight end D.J. Pearson is wearing No. 2, and new linebacker Adrian Perez is wearing No. 10.

Did not participate: Defensive end Nolan Nearhoof and wide receiver Donte Jeter did not practice. Also not spotted were ends Connor Sullivan and Cory Nolton and offensive linemen Jon Hill and Ethan Mengle.

Orlando QB Visiting This Weekend

One of the position holes Robert Morris didn't fill with the initial recruiting class was quarterback. Recruiting coordinators Scott Benzel and Scott Farison said it would be a priority with the final few spots available.

They're entertaining a potential candidate this weekend. Rivals national analyst Chris Nee has kindly tipped us off that Derik Abbott, out of Freedom High School in Orlando, is visiting Robert Morris this weekend.

Abbott's thrown for 5,500+ yards, 41 career touchdowns, and has solid academics. Here's the problem that's kept major schools away: He's 5-foot-11, 179 pounds.

Colonials Corner has learned Abbott does have an offer. We'll see what happens this weekend. Check out his Rivals profile with the link below

2012 RMU National Signing Day Headquarters

Welcome to the 2012 National Signing Day headquarters for RMU football. We'll have a list of all the verbal commitments as we track them down the next few days, and then beginning Wednesday, a list of all the official National Letter of Intent signees as well as other commits.

A couple things regarding this year's class:
- There is no more junior varsity program at Robert Morris. That means the roster is limited to 85 total players. At last check, the Northeast Conference's cap on athletic scholarships is 40, though schools can come up with additional aid (academic or financial) provided its available to all students.
- Looks like Robert Morris is going to add about 18 scholarship players this year. They may add a few others. By our count, 12 players graduated. Several others have transferred. We'll have a full transfer list soon and link to it in this thread.

The below list is only CONFIRMED verbal commitments. There are a couple others out there that we're trying to track down more information on. We have strict rules on the database, too, so we'll add to the Rivals.com database as we get additional confirmation.
