& is the first 16 seed to ever beat a 1 seed in NCAA Tournamnet history.

Former RMU guard Jarius Lyles (who never played a game here as he was Redshirting) went off for the Retrievers & they won by 20!

Huuuuge win for them & the midmjaor schools as a whole!

According to a couple of articles, Jarius transferred from RMU to UMBC to be closer to home. As I recall, and it is quite possible that I am not recalling correctly, Jarius was not happy with the facilities at RMU, specifically, Sewall Center. With the coming of UPMC Event Center, hopefully, we will not lose the next Jarius Lyles.

Awesome win for UMBC, and, I agree, for "midmajor schools as a whole."

Andrew Chiappazzi pointed out in a tweet, "UMBC was once a member of the NEC. Retrievers were in the league from 1998-2003."

Will UMBC coach, Ryan Odom, be moving to Pittsburgh? Odem suddenly has to be considered a hot prospect for any coaching opening. Could he turn around the Pitt program into a winner in the ACC?

Odom is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College. Chris Howard, was president of Hampden-Sydney prior to coming to RMU.

Ya I guess that facilities could have played a role too & the fact he was reportedly homesick. But, had he stayed, he could’ve truly been one of RMU’s best players ever.

As for their head coach, jumping to coach Pitt might be too big of a jump...idk...we’ll see how they play against Kansas St. on Sunday.
Maybe their coach could land a
MAC/A-10/American level job tho.

What a game. A 16 seed was going to eventually going to beat a one seed...but by 20? Wow. Lyles was fantastic, and while he did transfer to RMU, I don't believe he even finished one semester. Regardless, great for UPMC, midmajor hoops, and college basketball as a whole. That game exemplifies what the NCAA tournament is all about.

Definitely...only helps midmajors to get & keep players with the hope that even 15 & now 16 seeds can take out the top teams!
