New Redshirt Rule

RMU is more likely to get transfers from guys who were at mid-level or low-level FBS schools who weren't playing significant snaps or weren't playing at all.

Terence Stephens and Jimmy Walker are probably the best examples. Stephens was at Bowling Green, was just playing special teams, and now he's getting a chance to be a starter.

Walker was a junior college guy who walked on to SDSU and finally found a place that would give him a chance to be a starter.

I just don't see RMU getting starters at Oklahoma State or Auburn who want to transfer.

The new redshirt rule should help RMU with development, though. There are 26 true freshmen on the roster this year. Some of them are going to play all season, but the other guys who would typically not play at all can at least get some snaps, get used to game action, and have something to build on for next year. There's three defensive linemen who haven't played yet. For a couple home games, I'd throw them out there for a series or two in the second or third quarter. Keep things simple, just let them play football, and then use it as a teaching opportunity. And if they impress, maybe they get more time down the road and you take the redshirt off.
