Another big game for the guys tomorrow. SFU is 3-1 in NEC and was the preseason favorite. They lost at CCSU, beat Bryant on the road and LIU and SFBK at home. So there are some common opponents.

Hopefully the guys can improve FTs, continue to play excellent team defense, and just work hard.

Massey Info:
Ratings:
RMU: 171 (Duq 170, LaSalle 172)
SFUPA: 202 (Monmouth 201, Texas St 202)

Prediction:
Massey gives RMU a 65% chance to win, 79 to 75

My worthless prediction:
RMU comes out on fire, and runs it whistle to whistle, I think Coalman sets a career high with 12 pts. RMU 73 - 62.

Yet another big game! Definitely want to beat our closest NEC Rivals to keep first place in the league.

Hopefully Matty can get his 3 point shot going again.

Go RMU

Huge game....espn3. Seems like the school is doing everything they can to get a good student turn out. We shall see...

Free pizza...free bus ride...the works!

Maybe it will be our first home game with over 1,000 fans in attendance! (Unless u count the @ Duquesne game with 1.5K).

So...Show up fans! Team deserves it! Playing well! Big game as well! #GoRMU

Tough game for the guys. From NY view, St Francis wanted it more. A win would have put distance on the Franks for rmu, and Franks did not want that to happen. Tough game shooting wise for Matty.

Bounce back Saturday and forget this one.

Apparent bad attitudes may have kept some players on the bench. What was said in the post game comments?

Where's this coming from?

Everyone played their usual minutes, even with Matty and Dachon in foul trouble. Four of the five starters all played 27+ minutes, with Gombe playing 16 and playing less in the second half as RMU went more athletic.

Washington played 27. Coleman played 18 and Bain played 14, which is about normal. Cole only played 3 but neither he nor Gombe were effective inside at all, so that's understandable. Plus, his minutes have been low of late. So all nine guys played. The only guy missing from that rotation is Malik Petteway, and he's not healthy.

About the only thing surprising minutes wise was McConnell was on the bench in the final minutes. And, frankly, Matty had an awful game. Burke, Washington and Williams were all shooting better, and Thomas and Coalman gave RMU some rebounders late. Matty may have been pissed off, but he'll only use that as motivation to be better Saturday.

Someone near me said coach asked 2 and/or 22 if they wanted to be sent to the locker room now. I heard Matty told to have have a more positive attitude.

Doesn't sound like anything serious to me. Guys were likely frustrated with their play. Pretty poor performance on defense tonight.

First half was a nightmare. RMU was jacking up threes and missing, they were missing layups on the breakaway, just sloppy overall on offense. Crappy free throw shooting. Defense wasn't good at all. SFPA was scoring pretty much at will. They ran the Colonials off the court. RMU looked much better in the 2nd half, but they gave SF too much of a lead and couldn't recover.

Missing petteway really hurts. He, to me, seemed like a really good presence inside and held defender, not to mention the rebounding. Hopefully he gets back soon.

Agreed...

Get another chance at them at the end of February.

Gombe is solid but not as good as Petteway IMO. Either way, we could use him back to play 20 min a game.

Come back Malik!

I agree about the 3s. They are so much better when they attach the basket and then take what the defense gives them. It's only one game and they just need to put it behind them.

Give St. Francis credit, they played a great game with outstanding shooting. A lot of high-level teams would have had trouble with them in the first half.

We end up losing by nine, and four of the points were given up due to two technical fouls When you're struggling against an opponent there is no need to shoot yourself in the foot.

The Colonials will bounce back from this game. The thing that bothered me the most was the attendance, officially at 718. Playing a rival opponent at PPG, with both teams competing for first place in the conference, the weather was not an issue, conditions were perfect to attract a nice crowd, and only 718 people showed up. Probably 150 to 200 of the attendees were St. Francis fans. I know a lot of people believe that we will suddenly and magically attract much bigger crowds once we are in the new facility, and I hope they are correct.

I think RMU students are too lazy to make the trek downtown, even when bribed with a bus and free pizza. I also think that casual fans don't want to pay for parking or take the time to make it down. Maybe for a tournament game. We'll see.

I think the university is just going to have to swallow its pride on attendance and hope that the new arena stays on target to open for NEC play next season.

FYI, this is what Toole had to say about McConnell's game last night and his offensive struggles overall. This is from Omari Sankofa of the Post-Gazette.

“[Thursday] he didn’t play his best game for us, but he’s been defending great and he’s made a ton of winning plays, he’s rebounded the ball, he’s helped orchestrate things. We need a better performance from him in games like this, and he knows that. I think he’ll respond.”

I would not classify the students as "lazy" for not traveling from campus to downtown to watch a basketball game. Call me naive, I will assume the students were diligently working on their academic studies. ;) Now if I were still a student, I would have scrapped the books and gone for the free pizza and basketball.
Go Colonials!

Same, if I went to RMU, unless I had tons of work to do, I would have went.

Free food, free game, free transportation is really nice.

Being at PPG, I did think attendance would drop some, but not having one game over 1,000 yet this year is sad.

Based on trends from before, attendance would go up the year after a good/great basketball season. So it might take till next season, or late of this one, to get respectable crowds.

Maybe the Men’s team should have just played at the Rec center...sure it’s realt small but imagine that old school high school atmosphere.
St. Francis-Brooklyn's gym isn't much bigger, too.

I would imagine there's a contract with PPG and Palumbo, so maybe they can't break that deal for now. But maybe that's an option for next year until the new arena is available.

What's the seating for the rec? 700?

Although RMU isn't getting that many people to PPG/Palumbo, they are getting over that.

Although a packed house of 900-1,000 standing room only could be a cool feel. They should have tried a couple games there this year.

We don't consistently get students when the games are on campus, so not coming downtown is unfortunately not surprising. It would be fun to pack the rec center for a couple games next year before the UPMC Event Center is ready.

Agree with the REC center takes. Would have loved to see a few games there. If you watch the NEC9 here, you can see how good of an atmosphere it can be. Check out the number one play, an RMU ladies game winner at the buzzer (also, congrats ladies! Huge win!!)

Yep! Definitely not against having some games in there next year especially if some more seating/bleachers could be brought in,

I mentioned this awhile back, that I thought it would be a good idea. If it holds 800, that's fine, will be packed, actually prob would have to turn people away, if you play there, and do well next year which it certainly looks like they will, you build a buzz. Simple supply and demand.

Then when new gym opens, lots of buzz and pent up demand.

I didn't find the rec center capacity. I caught some glimpses while watching WBB highlights and there only appeared to be a few rows of seating in each aide.

There are 3 rows of seats behind the players bench area and I think the same across the gym. They have room to place some chairs along the court side.
The women’s team loves playing there and just attend a game there. There were so many football players and students there compared to Sewall Center games.
The men’s game there would be an atmosphere the players would love.

Yeah, they may not be able to change contracts with PPG/Palumbo for this year, but they should definitely play at the Rec Center next year until UPMC is open in January.

Yep just charge $10 flat rate ticket cost to get in (& Obviously RMU Stufents are free).

I also think they should have a High School/ Other College ID to get in for $5 or $7. Get the young fans to see #RMCMB.

And the rec center really only has 3 rows of seating on each side?
