Doesn't look like we're going to get ANY calls tonight. Colonials are hanging tough early.
The Colonials played well for 30 out of the 40 minutes in the game. Unfortunately, they played very poorly during the second 10 minutes of the game. Matty getting into early foul trouble definitely hurt. I did see a lot that I like about this team, and I am optimistic about the season, especially for Conference play. Our bigs showed a lot of potential. Petteway had a double/double and could develop into one of the better PF in the NEC. Bain had 7 points and 5 rebounds in 17 minutes of play. Although David Cole got into foul trouble and did not put up impressive stats, I think he showed some of his abilities. These guys are still getting used to the speed and competitive level of D-1. Koby is extremely impressive for a true freshman. Washington definitely struggled again and his lack of size hurts him, but once he gets more accustomed to D-1 competition he should be able to add to the scoring for the Colonials. It was great to have Dachon back, he is truly a quality player. As a true freshman, it is reasonable to expect that Jon Williams is going to get better and better as the season progresses. Gombe has not gotten much playing time so far, but he has a big body and looks to be able to contribute to the team. Both Coalman and Ashmeade have to ability to play various positions and to contribute quality minutes. We lost to a good D-1 team last evening, in front of a nearly full 7,000 seat arena after traveling across the Country. Once this team learns to play hard and to keep its composure for 40 minutes, instead of 30 minutes, this can be a successful season.
Go Colonials!
Deff think they can beat sd. Gcu is a really solid team, that school is all in on hoops.
Win would be good good for the psyche of team.
I was surprised by the GCU environment, it was bigger than I expected and like March Madness in there. The refs took a big toll I think, and the fouls hurt Matty's game in particular. I saw a lot of promise in the new guys, especially the bigs. As I said before the first game, the young point guards will be a key to the season. Very surprised they didn't bring in a JUCO PG. I'd like to see them drive, draw and dish more.
Grand Canyon is pretty solid and experienced. I think that showed last night. A quick aside on the atmosphere - they've pumped a ton of money into that program since going D-I and it shows. Must be nice to have all that online student tuition money.
RMU's pace and play in the second half is probably closer to what it wants to play. First half was too fast and that got away from the young guys.
I expect this team to be ragged at times, especially on offense. They're just so inexperienced. But you can really see flashes of promise from an individual standpoint and on defense.
They may still have some issues with San Diego, but they could win. The schedule will get easier when RMU comes back east, though. Duquesne is 2-0 but the Dukes haven't played anyone and it's a rivalry game. Norfolk State, Little Rock, YSU, Siena are all very winnable.
I think a good goal for RMU would be to get 5-6 wins in non-conference play and see if you can get 12 wins in the NEC.
Awful lot of positives from the beginning of season. I'd sign up for 5 or 6 wins in non com schedule for sure, should be able to get close to 20 wins this year which would be great.
Once these guys get comfortable, tons of talent and potential.
