Maybe we got a little bit ahead of ourselves. After winning three games in a row, the Colonials went down for a crucial road game against first place Mount St. Mary’s. A lot of Colonial fans were excited and expecting a different game from a couple of weeks ago. Sure, it wasn’t a rout from start to finish, but the end result was the same. The Colonials made a few runs and were able to keep the game respectable, but the Mount were in control the entire way. The Mountaineers were able to pull away at the end, as they defeated Robert Morris 70-49.
BK Ashe led the way for the Mount, scoring 19 points on 8/13 shooting. Will Miller was feeling it from beyond the arc, as he put up 14 points, and little, but tenacious guard Junior Robinson was able to chip in with 11 points. Robinson also played hounding defense on Kavon Stewart, forcing multiple turnovers. Robinson’s defense appeared to have rattled the Colonials on offense, especially at the top of the key. The Colonials turned the ball over a total of 20 times. Ouch.
Rodney Pryor led the Colonials with 11 points, as he played in only his second game since being cleared to play after suffering a concussion. In addition, freshmen Isaiah Still and Matty McConnell scored 10 apiece. Robert Morris came into this game with the mindset that this game would be different. While I like the attitude, talk is cheap. Multiple players for Robert Morris seemed to take plays off. They got lazy, stopped rotating at full speed and refused to box out. Robert Morris is one of the worst rebounding teams in the country and it showed. The Mount are playing at an extremely high level right now. Each player knows their role and the unity/togetherness is exciting to watch. I’d say they’re the favorite right now in the NEC.
A loss is a loss, but it’s time to move on.
Robert Morris (4-5) at St. Francis PA (5-4)
HUGE game.
A win today would put the Colonials at the middle of the pack. A lot of teams are fighting for a better position in the NEC. If the Colonials want to win today, they need to move on and forget about the loss to Mount St. Mary’s. Kavon Stewart and Elijah Minnie have been playing at such a high level. As Stewart finishes up his junior season, consistency is going to be key. Even if he isn’t scoring at the rate he’s been scoring at, his job is to control and manage the tempo of the game. The matchup between him and fellow junior point guard Malik Harmon is going to be a good one. Harmon is a good shooter, will Stewart be able to match him?
Stewart was outstanding against Bryant. He was playing with confidence and played like the best point guard in the NEC. Elijah Minnie was also having himself a ballgame. He was hitting everything. Also, Minnie showed nice versatility around the basket as far as defense and rebounding. His versatility will be needed today, especially going against a guy like Ronnie Drinnon, who’s game has improved every season. He has a nice touch around the rim, and is a solid defensive player.
St. Francis is a predictable, yet unpredictable team. When they are hitting their three-point shots, they are a very tough team to play. When their shots aren’t falling, they tend to struggle. They live and die by the three, which isn’t always a good thing (not if you ask the Golden State Warriors). Rodney Pryor is going to have to step up. He’s been penetrating nicely and getting to the charity stripe, but his outside shot has been off since returning from injury.
He certainly looks a little rusty as coach Toole alluded to, so hopefully he finds his shot today. Every season, this team has a “big three.” This season, when those three guys are on, this team is tough to beat. When they are off, they leave the door wide open for their opponent. Rodney Pryor, Elijah Minnie and Kavon Stewart need to step up today. It’s a rivalry game, so both sides should be ready. Will they? I have a good feeling.
