What a way to start the season! Breaking the streak of losses to Dayton! It's been a long time coming. I think that is the best the offense has looked since banny started here. Granted they did finish with only 13 pts but they tallied up over 300 yards, they looked to move the ball really well. TJ and cole combined for over 130 yards and it would've been been over 150 if holding calls were eliminated. The offensive line got a push for a good chunk of the game, and jimmy found some receivers well and if not for a couple drops would've been over 250 passing probably. I noticed that Rene came in and played the second half at right tackle. I'm not sure if that was because of Dylan youngs play in the first half or if it was because of an injury. The defense had me worried in the first half because of the yards they were allowing. They bent but they didn't break. There were some drives where Dayton got into the red zone and came out with no points on missed field goals. There was some pre snap penalties that need eliminated and some defensive penalties that allowed drives to continue after 3rd down but I'm not here to nit pick. RMU executed enough in all 3 facets of the game to pull out the win against a very disciplined and technically sound Dayton team. More good news on the way, within a few more games we should have everybody back. Included in those players is freshman all American gee Stanley, all conference safety Andy smigiera, tight end Matt Gonzalez, and Harrison dreher

Here are some of my notes from the game:
  • RMU started with game with the following OL: Hicks-Sheldon-McAllister-Minford-Young. RMU ended the game with Hicks-Remaley-McAllister-Minford-Rodriguez.
  • Per the staff, they played the youth along the OL last year because they had to. This year, the youth is playing because they are that good.
  • RMU had a total of 122 total yards rushing against Dayton. RMU's rushing total for all of 2016; 581 yard
  • No doubt that Walker is the QB. Barr did not dress due to an injury. Romanchak did get a catch but also had a bad drop.
  • Tavin Allison can fly, almost had a 2nd long TD catch but dropped it.
  • Very impressed with how the OL and TEs came off the ball against Dayton.
  • Good combo with Neal & Blake. Note that Dreher is now listed as a RB and some were saying that RMU played without their starting RB (referring to Dreher). Going to be interesting to see how they mix him into the game next week.
  • Gonzalez seems to be the starting TE when he returns. Going to be interesting to see how they mix in Green and Elliott.

  • Lamica started at OLB but didn't finish the game. Devon DeFrances played a lot at OLB.
  • Ferguson was a monster yesterday.
  • With Smigiera out, Drew Allen shifted over to WS. Tevaul Brown got the start at CB. It will be a few weeks until Smigiera is back.
  • No time line on when Lee will be back or if he will be back with how people were talking.

I had questions about the oline before the game. Not anymore. They impressed me, especially late in the game. They were able to run the ball because of a better offensive line, better pass game, and two RB's that are 190+. Having Dreher and Gonzalez back is a good problem to have.

No one impressed me more than Walker. Not only did the ball come out quick and sharp but he ran the offense like a seasoned pro. He was confident and never got flustered.

Thanks for updates on status. All great points. I assume you meant "Gee"? I see him as nothing more than a 3rd and long guy. Not to mention he was on the sidleine yesterday in street clothes and looks like he MIGHT weigh 195lbs. Tough to pull any of the three guys from yesterday regardless of down and distance.

Yeah meant Gee...made the edit. Rose looked quick off the edge when he was in. Could be a player to watch on 3rd downs.

Appreciate all the insight guys. I just had a feeling about that allison. One of those guys that sneaks in late, and EMU isn't the joke they used to be, they have been getting some good recruits lately. Hopefully he can keep everything in order and be around a 4 years. Has some height, deff has speed.

Gonzo is going to be great, and think Dalton is going to be a super reliable guy, might be more of a blocker this year, but have high hopes for him. Good that we have green to kind of fill the gap this year as he is a darn good player himself.

Dreher is going to be electric wherever he is. He will be like Kyle buss I think in terms of if he is one on one with someone, forget it. (Don't know if it was mentioned here, but buss is on UCONN now)

Walker is everything that was mentioned, and that helps the oline a ton when teams can't just stack the box and pin their ears back. He has ability to beat the blitz, and hopefully team, coaches and walker will become more comfortable audible out of plays.

Bottom line, great win, if D can play up to their potential, and O can can get it rolling, could be in for something special. Next week will be a hell of a test.

First off great team win all three aspects of the game. We flipped the field a few times on punts and recovered well after a missed FG to win the game. Job well done by all beating Dayton is exactly what the players, coaches and school needed. The place was electric for awhile after the game.
As for analysis from my part I'm still not over confident and sold like some on this OL I didn't see the movement everyone is talking about we sealed the outside with the Tackles and ends but up the middle I saw little to no push. Every gain of significants was bounced and against better teams that's not going to be as easy. Also the pick Jimmy should have just held onto was a slipped block on the inside. I think the line showed a lot of growth and looked ok but I'm still not sold they are as good as the forum seems to believe.

Jimmys quick release and accuracy is truly appreciated on this team and his ability to see the field will only get better. All around first solid FCS outing by him. He will coverup for a lot of mistakes with his ability to just flat out play his position.

"Moons Finest"and TJ looked good and I think like a fine wine will get better as the year rolls on especially if Miller can get into a groove with play calling for those two. Add Dreher and lookout this could really be fun.

Timmy Vecchio should from here on out be referred to as Clutch. Drops one gets his number called in a do or die situation and prevails. What a player. WR is in good hands and Gonzo at TE coming back soon it only gets better in my opinion.

The D looked like we all expect. Bend don't break and make huge stops when needed. We could do away with the late whistle penalties that could hurt against better teams and did cost a TD on a drive extenstion after the late hit to the QB.

Zamiska and Ferg looked good as well as all the DE's. They played really well up front. Boyette made a few plays back on D as well. He takes up a few blockers almost all the time.

Should be even better when Andy gets back

It's YSU week. Let's Go Bobby Mo!!!

The OL did have some push against Dayton. How else do you get 122 net rushing yards. It wasn't a monster game for the OL, there were mistakes. But take the 2016 OL in their 1st game vs the 2017 team. The 2016 OL struggled against a DII team while the 2017 OL got the job done against Dayton.

This was a game RMU should have won and needed to win. The rest of the non-conference games are tough. YSU will be a tough matchup for RMU.

Was that still the #3 QB in the pocket when everyone figured out by the 2nd Qtr you could put 9 guys in the box or were we at out 4th QB at your point of reference to last years line vs the D2 opener.
I'll say it again a good QB helps a lot , hell I played on a line that was mediocre at best with a great QB and we won games we shouldn't have in college.
I said it at the begining I thought that they showed up and played ok.
We ran inside traps that were losses. You need movement for those to work. We ran off and outside the tackles for the majority of the yardage. That's my point. That's tough to do against a good DE and LB core.
I'm not downplaying the effort and play, hell ya they played good for their first college game. I'm just saying lots not blow this up and be tremendously disappointed if they struggle.

I agree, that was a good win but we will have to play much better to win against far better competition, i.e. YSU and NDSU.
YSU lost to Pittsburgh in overtime on an intercepted pass by YSU trying to score the tying touchdown. NDSU set records in beating Mississippi Valley State 72 to 7. Eastern Tennessee will be a tough challenge and not sure about VMI. And then some tough league games. Not sure if the UD players stayed overnight or maybe rode up in the morning and were suffering from the long bus ride, but they did not look anything like last years team as far as aggressiveness, speed and size. Additionally the loss of their starting QB was obvious. The win against UD, a non-scholarship program, is good but improvements have to be made to have a successful season. Hopefully the return of the injured players will help.

I gotta agree with M4fam, last year we didn't have a single qb that could consistently throw the ball downfield, jimmy took a TON of pressure off of that line Saturday. Dayton wasn't able to Load the box with 9-10 guys and just blitz the whole game. The traps and powers didn't have a whole lot of success. And when things broke down, jimmy made a few plays to escape or throw the ball away. Minus that int. There were still plays where the middle of the line got blown off the ball and the running backs were hit before even getting back to the line of scrimmage. There was definitely progress, I can't deny that, but I think part of that progress was aided by a really good QB and two quality backs

A win is a win no matter if it's alast second FG or a blow out. This program needed that win.
If Vecchio didn't jump up for a bad throw from Walker in the 4th to at least tip it, Dayton picks it off and probably outs the game away.

There were a lot of good breaks that went RMU's way. They will need to get ready for a tough YSU team.

The offense established a nice base. Confidence is huge; I don't think many players on this team have had much confidence of late. And Mike Miller knows he can stretch the field now against good competition. That was a big thing that had been missing - RMU rarely took shots downfield the past couple years.

But with a base established, this team needs to eliminate mistakes and continue to improve. Jimmy Walker was good but he missed on a few throws and got lucky on a few others, including one pass to Vecchio and the completion late to Green.

His receivers need to be sharper, too. Allison had a great game but could have put the game away when he broke free in the fourth quarter only to drop the pass. I noticed at least one broken route and another drop in the second half, too.

Original_RMC pointed out the line shake-up at the end...RMU needs consistency on the line. I actually hope that was a case of injuries, because if it was a quick hook from the coaches, that doesn't bode well for any lineman having a long leash and could be disruptive. At least if it was because of injuries then it's understandable.

Defense was good. It needs more pressure on the quarterback - two sacks and a couple hurries is a good start, but you need more to truly disrupt good QBs. And I'd like to see the DBs be more active. Just one pass break-up? With or without Andy Smigiera, I'd like to see them be disruptive.

RMU won 13-10. Dayton's kicker missed two field goals. RMU missed a sure TD. It was a good boost of confidence but by no means was it perfect. Still a long road for this team to travel.

Is Dreher expected to play this week? It has been a long time coming. His name has been one of the most mentioned on this board for several years now, and he still has not played a down. If he lives up to half of our expectations, he is going to be a great one.
