Basketball Preview

I noticed in the social media posts that Koby seemed to be running with the second team, so it's interesting he may come off the bench.

Toole did that with Lucky Jones a lot when Lucky was a senior. Jones finished the game with the starters and played a ton of minutes, but it was an attempt to have a second wave of guys come in and keep the tempo up that was established by the starters.

Also noticed Malik a lot in the social media posts. Great to see he's on his way back.

Except Koby is possibly the most athletic person to come thru RMU Hoops & is only a sophomore. Will he get mad not being a starter? Toole better not screw this one up.

The Colonials have 12 scholarship players eligible and healthy. All 12 have the ability to contribute. That is the most depth RMU has had in a long time. Having guys as talented as Koby and Malik coming off the bench should be impressive. Every coach struggles with players complaining that they should be starters when they are not. Coach Toole has always believed players should earn playing time in practice. I have no idea why Koby is not, or may not, be a starter. Maybe other players are putting in more effort in practice or maybe Coach Toole is just trying to send a message to Koby that he needs to step it up. I remember Toole yelling at Lucky in practice one time that great players play hard every play in practice and in games. With talented players that want to be great players, I think Toole will push them harder to help them achieve that goal, and if it means taking them out of the starting lineup to get his message across, he will do that.
The game against USC will be a huge challenge, but regardless of the outcome, I am excited about this year's team.

Toole has countless examples he can point to as guys who play starters minutes but who don't start, both pro and right at RMU. Andre Iguodola has done it for a while for Golden State. The Spurs have done it for years with various guys, especially as their stars got older.

Lucky Jones led RMU in minutes played per game, rebounds per game, and was third in points per game as a senior but only started 19 games. Heck, Leondre Washington started one game last year but played 23.7 minutes per game, fifth most on the team.

If Koby is only worried about his stats and minutes, then he's got one foot out the door already. Considering he still played okay in the scrimmage against Kent State coming off the bench, I think he's okay with it. We'll see how it goes.

Toole changes lineups a lot anyway. This may not stick, even if Koby is 100 percent on board.

Good points in here & makes me feel a little better about the situation.

Also, Toole normally messes around with the lineup a lot so Koby probably will be in it eventually.

Pac12 networks webpage looks like can watch the game for free FYI. Have not tried to load on smart TV but on phone looks like it is free for all fans. Hopefully will work and a good chance to see the guys in a real game! Go Bobby Mo!

Amazing first half. 5 looks great minus the tech, which seemed minor. Also, what a treat to listen to Walton call a RMU game. He has certainly done his homework with regards to the university and the bball program.

Hope the boys can hang tough in the second half and pull the upset.

Faded down the stretch. But the 83-62 final isn't indicative of how close this was.

About as good of a performance you can ask for as a season opener on the road against a PAC 12 team without actually pulling off the upset. Josh Williams looked excellent with 20 points. Koby Thomas with 16 and 10. Matty McConnell with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Lot to like.

They played with a big time team for 30 mins. Leading with I think 12 left. It got away from them at the end, but again, a hell of effort and put a scare in USC. Lots of things to be positive about. 5 and the the Williams will be great NEC players. Other than Lville and Purdue I would not count them out of any OCC game.

Heck with this performance you can’t completely count them out of Louisville or Purdue.

Looking at the recap the Colonials were ahead with about 11:30 to go. USC scored last 13 to skew the end result. I didn't see or hear the game but it sounds like a game against Pitt they were ahead mid second half and then refs and superior opponent took over.

I watched, refs were little off, but nothing crazy to me. Guys just missed shots down the stretch and they were hitting 3s.

Again, pretty exciting game. 22, the elder Williams, and 5 played great. Will be a team to reckon with in NEC for sure. Mo State is going to be a really tough test. A win there would be huge.

Refs were fine. The T on Petteway was bizarre but they tagged USC for the same thing later in the game.

If Matty and Jon hit a couple 3s or RMU gets to the basket a bit more, they may have pulled it off. But offense went cold and guys tried to shoot their way back into it so USC pulled away.

It was there for the taking. USC did just enough to pull it out. Good lesson for the guys.

You can’t have Matty & Jon being that off from three & beat a Power 5 school. Some of the looks Jon took weren’t great & same with Matty but still they didn’t hit them.

Offense struggled against Missouri State. But that's another good team. Both MSU and USC could very well be tournament teams.

Chance to pick up three wins here before Purdue. Better blow out Mount Aloysius and Miss Valley State and Stetson arent that good.
