Ya I had thought about this for a while. Technically, he played too many games last season to get another year but teams can plead for another year due to “medical hardship”. Glad RMU is at least pursuing it for Malik.
It would be big for next year to get him back.
A successful appeal for another year for Petteway would make for an incredibly front court-heavy roster next year. As far as I know Gebrewit is here and will be on the team next year, Olisa has a signed LOI, and D. J. Russell has verbally committed. Even if Josh comes back for a fifth year I think we need another guard.
Would be great for team to get Malik for another name. Guard is tough next year no matter what without Matty.
Hopefully Gebrewhit will be good next year as we need him to be without Matty. A good JUCO/transfer wing would be a nice add too.
Josh is coming back. No reason for him not to. He's got the year of eligibility and it's the last chance for him to play with Jon.
Are you sure about Philmon? He's still on the roster, but he wasn't in the team photo and hasn't been sitting on the bench. I also haven't seen any practice photos with him, which wasn't the case earlier this year.
Regardless, there will be movement. I wouldn't be surprised to see David Cole transfer. It's possible Sayveon McEwen could, too, in a search for more playing time.
And while it was great to see Koby Thomas come back, he definitely had a tough season, so we'll have to wait and see what he wants to do.
All of that said, I doubt Malik gets the extra year. Since he played over 30% of the games last year, its harder to get that waived. If the blood clots had lingered into this year, he might have more wiggle room. Thankfully, for his health, they did not. Unfortunately, that good health news likely means he's done.
A lot has to shake out with the roster.
-Unless David Cole is ok not playing at all, he will transfer. He can play immediately but I think did lose a whole year of eligibility because you can’t redshirt twice (without medical reasons that is).
-I would still like Koby to come back but idk how big is role is with this team. Possibly could get bigger if he gets back to his rookie of the year form & impresses Toole.
-Josh Williams is very likely to come back in my opinion. New arena is here. RMU should return a lot of their key players & should have a solid shot at winning the league next year.
-I would put Malik’s chances about what u said in his games played at about 30% just b/c you never know with the NCAA. Depends how they’re feeling on any given day.
