RMU Game Notes

  • Ben Walter starting at DE and Thimons at the other
  • Rodriguez at LT and Trevor Hicks not even listed on two deep.
  • Minford getting the start at LG.
  • Mundy listed as backup Center
  • Gonzo listed as starter but both Petrick and Gonzo will get plenty of field time.
  • DelleFemine starting over Allison.
  • No surprise at RB
  • Walker starting QB with Martin as the backup. Lewis not listed.

Walker starting isn't surprising. Stunned about Lewis. Maybe he's banged up? Or maybe Martin is really coming on, which would be awesome, since he's a redshirt freshman and Walker is a senior.

I seem to recall a fair amount of buzz around DelleFemine until he stayed out all last year with an injury.

I don't know enough about the offensive line to comment on guys being in the right spot or being good fits for the system. Seems odd if Hicks was running with the 1s in the scrimmage that he's not on the depth chart. Injury?

We'll see about the DL scheme, but I don't understand why Chris Stanford is now a back-up nose tackle. Maybe he'll still play a lot, but that's really odd to me. And where the heck is Derian Smith?

I'm sure we'll have a better understanding once we see this team in action.

I thought I had heard D Smith left the team, not certain about that. If Lewis is not banged up, Martin must be looking good.

Lots of surprises to me, and without knowing injuries tough to say too much.

Really hope the O line holds up and gives Jimmy sometime. An improved run game will help a lot, but seems like a deep WR and talented TE group

Smith is still on the roster that was included in the game notes, and that includes all of the late position moves (Barr to TE, Muehlbauer back to safety). So I don't know.

FYI, the game will be streamed live via Facebook. Looks like something new that the NCAA is trying with FCS teams that don't have a streaming package like RMU does in the NEC.

Can you post the link to the depth chart? Thanks very much!

Apologies regarding d. Smith, that is a shock he is not listed, assume he has to be hurt. I think he is a stud.

I am excited about a few of the local guys.

Anthony Dellefemine, I thought he was an excellent recruit out of Norwin. I don't believe he was heavily recruited, at least not by D-Is. but he is a good athlete, with toughness and a passion for the game. After an injury last summer, he not only completed his rehab, he worked hard to make himself stronger and faster. He and Tim Vecchio went to neighboring rival high schools, but I believe they have known each other for a long time and workout together. Now, they are starting together at RMU.

George Martin, I really thought he was under-recruited out of high school. He is a smart kid, who has the size and the arm to excel in the college game. As someone already mentioned, he is a redshirt freshman, so if he spends this year as the backup, he could be the starter for the next three years.

I am not as familiar with Ben Walter, he will be interesting to watch, he was a TE in high school and a FB at RMU until recently, and now he is a starting DE.
I am also looking forward to seeing what Thimons and Antuono can do on the DL. Every good team needs a player from Woodlands Hills and we have Heavon Price. If he were a few inches taller he may have been one of many FBS recruits out of that high school.

Of course, we are all hoping the OL takes a big step up this season. There are three quality local players listed as starters, McAllister, Minford, and Fennell.

Definitely looking forward to seeing Terence Stephens at RB. I have no doubt that he will be at least a good and reliable back, the question is, can he be something more than that.

Go Colonials!

Lots of mistakes on the press release. Expect some differences come Saturday. This is the best team we've had opening day in 4 years. Whether we win or lose the product should be good.

Can you expand on the mistakes? I figured we'll see a fair amount of rotation regardless, but if some guys are starting who aren't on the list, that's interesting.

I thought the same thing when I saw this as well. Gonna be very interesting tomorrow, yet I know this is the most excited and optimistic the kids have been in three seasons!!

RMU trails Dayton 28-14 at the half.

Couple personnel things I've noticed:
- Trevor Hicks is indeed starting at left tackle. Rene Rodriguez is at right tackle. Eric McAllister started at center, as expected. I've seen a lot of Connor Mundy and Alex Minford, too.
- Matt Gonzalez is much more of a factor in the pass game that Steve Petrick.
- Chase Bodeman has played a lot at receiver and has a touchdown catch. Tim Vecchio and Delano Madison are in there almost every snap.
- Chris Stanford has played a lot on the defensive line, rotating a bit with Amir Fenwick and Izon Pulley.
- Cameron Darley, a grad transfer who wasn't on the two-deep, has played a fair amount, too.
- Freshman EJ Jimenez seems to be the nickel corner.

This D is going to be trouble if they don't get it figured out asap. O looking better than it has in years.

Complete opposite of years past.

Edit: guys are soo far out of position. Just getting gashed over and over.

Defense doesn't have much depth and that's a very experienced offense that Dayton has.

I'd be careful about making predictions or assumptions for a few games. Let's see how guys adapt and how the staff adjusts. We all know this is a rebuilding process.

We will get there. As staunch as a defensive guy as I am it was nice to finally see some offense. I could not take another year of 800 slow and brutally mismanaged 3 and outs. We actually looked good on offense. We moved with some tempo at times. No more fingers crossed for the 3rd and long TB screen into the boundary to work for the umpteenth time.

With that said, the D will get better. I saw a lot of holds but of course if they are not called then they are not a penalty and players need to get off of blocks. Coach Clark IS defense. We will improve on that side of the ball. That is why I am optimistic. We can and will get better.

Upward and onward.

Dayton wins 49-28.

Experience vs inexperience, even after Dayton lost their QB.

Offense was ok. Surprisingly better in passing game, kept Walker from getting pressured, though he took a few hits to make a play.

Walker was good, thought guys could have made a few plays on his throws. Madison dropped a TD. Gonzo was really solid.

Not much room for Stephens, but I like his physicality.

Defense was another story. No penetration, even when they tried to blitz. Bet that will be a point of emphasis. Gotta clean up the penalties and missed assignments, but I expected those for this team.

If RMU can build off this, I think people will start to see the promise the team has. But there will be growing pains.

The Colonials produced 416 yards offensively, which is the most for RMU since they visited VMI in Sept. 28, 2013.

So, taking a deeper look at personnel from Saturday...

QB - Walker really was solid. The box score doesn't track drops, but there were at least three, including Madison on the touchdown and Gonzalez down the sideline. I think his accuracy was off a bit as the Colonials went down, too. Still, even though he was just 16 of 32, 219 yards and 2 TDs should get the job done most days. Nice to see George Martin get some reps in, too. I wonder if he's the legit No. 2 or if they just got him time to prep for next year.

RB - Stephens had 18 carries for 70 yards. He seemed to get hit early before he had a chance to build up momentum. Kendall Rodgers didn't add much. Good to see Alijah Jackson get some reps as a freshman late.

WR/TE - RMU didn't rotate at receiver as much as I thought they would. Vecchio, Bodeman, and Madison started and caught passes. Gonzalez was the only TE to catch a pass. Allison was the only reserve to catch a pass. Hanks, Barr, Magee and Petrick played but didn't have a catch. The stats don't track targets. Warren Robinson apparently didn't play at all, so I'm guessing he's banged up, as I'd expect him to at least play special teams.

OL - Hicks, Mundy, McAllister, Young, and Fennell started from left to right. I know I saw Rodriguez in there at tackle a few times. John Sheldon, Patrick Banning, Alex Minford, and Adam Sedzmak all played according to the stats, but not sure if that was just on special teams. The biggest thing, for me, is cohesiveness. I don't mind moving some guys around for a couple weeks here to see how they react to game situations. But by Week 4, I want a group of five that's going to play every snap. They didn't give up a sack, which is good, but they can be better.

DL - I was underwhelmed. Antuono, Pulley, Fenwick and Thimons started. Walter, Darley and Stanford also played. No one got a sack. Walter and Darley each had a tackle for a loss. They didn't get into the backfield enough and when they did, they often were pushed too far upfield to make a play.

LB - Also underwhelmed. Lamica and Wollet need to be more of a presence. Lamica had six tackles, one for a loss, while Wollet had four. TJ Neal also had four and I'm stunned that he had that many, because I didn't notice him all game. Romanchak and Mason also played, but I believe that was mostly special teams.

DB - Dayton was accurate passing, but they didn't really burn RMU deep. The 64-yard TD was a short pass that RMU blew tackles and couldn't get off blocks on. Take that away and you've only given up 129 passing yards. I'd just like to see more plays made. No one even had a pass break up. Brown and Price started at corner, but Jimenez played a lot and had six tackles. Muehlbauer was in a lot at safety with Amos and Canton, too. Arrington Johns, Dejuan Dandridge, Alex Kwasiniewski, Devon Dickerson and Jacob Thomas all played, mostly on special teams.

In short, a lot of young guys got their first snaps. The defense felt vanilla, but I feel confident that Clark and Plungas will work on that. I'm optimistic about the offense after it posted over 400 yards and scored four TDs, but they have to stay healthy.

Get a win this week against D-II Virginia State.

Virginia State has the opposite personnel of UD. UD had a lot of smaller quick players. Virginia State has 10 players over 300 lbs. and several in the 250-300 lb range. It is going to be difficult to over power their defensive line with the run game.
OL 6'3" 311 LBS
OT 6'3" 300 LBS
OL 6'4" 310 LBS
OL 6'4" 305 LBS
DT 5'11" 340 LBS
DT 6'2" 340 LBS
OT 6'5" 300 LBS
OL 6'5" 311 LBS
OL 6'4" 309 LBS
OL 6'3" 325 LBS

UD seems to always have the smallest players of the teams that we play on both lines, but we always have trouble with them. I have always believed, in any sport, if the competition is between a big athlete and a quick athlete, I will pick the quick athlete to win every time.

I would too. Hopefully it will work out well on Saturday. It is really obvious the current offensive coordinator is way above his previous predecessors at RMU. I would look for him to open up the offense and wear down the defensive line.

Nice seeing Gonzo (6'4" 230) and Bodeman (6'2 210) used downfield in the pass game. I always thought Bodeman could help somewhere with his athleticism ad size. I think Tim Vecchio is excellent but he is 5'9". I believe Madison and Robinson are both 5'8"? Really tough to throw downfield and across the middle to short WR's. Bodeman caught one deep in where the safety draped him, PA was called, and he still caught the ball.

Having Stephens at RB is nice as well. Some actual size with skill. Of course it helps having a bunch of true sophomores and juniors on the oline who took so many lumps the past two years. The blocking schemes seem to be better as Jimmy actually had time to throw.

Still scratching my head as to why Chris Stanford only played sparingly? He has to be one of our best Dlinemen right? Injured? In the dog house? Gotta get that kid going. The best thing about this loss is it is all correctable stuff from the defensive side. A young secondary taking proper angles, tackling, Dline getting off blocks, etc.
