RMU vs Central State Game Notes

Interesting. First time Matt Holmes has been on the depth chart all season and he's listed as a starter at defensive end. He played a lot against Duquesne and did a solid job.

Not to State the obvious, but need to win this one. Win this, build a little confidence, might be able to steal one against Wagner or SHU.

Sure coaches are telling them, but these guys are not coming in to lay down and collect a check. They are coming to win and make a statement. Going to need to play tails off and earn this win.

Well, that was something. Nice to see the team get a win. Some really incredible performances and surprising things, too.

Two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the first time since 1997. Terence Stephens, Alijah Jackson, and the guys up front have turned this into a pretty dangerous running game.

Matt Gonzalez 10 touchdowns on the season after 3 more today. Tied a school record. The national FCS leader going into today had 12, so Gonzo is among the FCS leaders in TD receptions.

539 yards of offense. Most since 2001.

I'm not sure if it was planned or if something was up with Jimmy Walker, but George Martin looked good again. Thought it might be something with Jimmy, because he left in the middle of a drive in the second after a couple of incompletions. Then Walker came back after halftime, threw an interception, and Martin was back out there again until the final drive when Walker just handed the ball off. Jimmy threw four TD passes, so it's not like he was awful. Maybe he was a little banged up and the staff kept checking on him after the incompletions and INT?

Matt Barr looked outstanding. He needs to play more.

Defensive snaps were all over the place. Jonathan Wanat started at linebacker and was around the ball a lot. Bunch of guys played who I don't think have played much before. Aniello Buzzacco and Alex Kwasniewski played more than they have all season. Wonder how much is just looking for something that works and how much was due to Central State using that no-huddle.

I'm now really curious to see how RMU does against St. Francis. The Red Flash have scored a fair amount of points, but their offense is actually the worst in yards in the NEC. And they don't run the ball well. That may help RMU a bit.

Good test for the running game, too, because St. Francis' run defense is the best in the NEC.

O did great for most part, Oline in particular. 50 must have done something to get pulled for awhile, think maybe on safteshe snapped it early though not certain.

82 looked pretty hurt, hope not super seriously. Good to see them running big WRs out there, ie barr. Too good of an athlete to sit. Wonder what is up with Chase?

Not to be hyper negative, but RMUs d is what ails teams O. SFU will get at least 400 yards, if they keep them to that, they will have a chance. Can't continue to expect O to score every drive and win.

After all these years of watching such an anemic RMU offense, it is refreshing to see the Colonials' move the ball and score points. Yippee, the Colonials had 539 yards of total offense. That would really be great except the RMU defense gave up 614 yards against a very mediocre, at best, D-II team. The Colonials are giving up on average 48 points per game. As bad as the offense has been in the past, the defense is as bad or worse this year. How can this be? Is it the players, or is it the coaches? Yes, the talent and depth are lacking this year, apparently. But, come on, it should not be this bad. Does the defense even have players that we can count on developing into better players next year? Or, is this going to be a multiple year project in order to get the defense respectable?

The offense has been truly amazing by almost any standard, and compared to last few year makes it even more impressive.

We appear to be pretty deep on O, and all the 100 yard rushing games are a testament to the improvement in O line made in just a few months. Most importantly on O there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm when they take the field. Often you see the OLine getting out on the field fast when a possession starts. Have not seen much, or any, finger pointing on O, just a lot of congratulations when they make a big play. Seems like a completely different team out there. One more note to end my rambling on O, the WRs appear to be doing a great job blocking down field.

Like many on here, the D is such a mystery. There does not seem to be many turnovers created, sacks or pressure in general, or urgency to get to the ball. There were many instances against central State when they had big plays after breaking a tackle at or near line of scrimmage. Did see a lot of new guys out there, not sure if due to injury or not. Do not recall seeing Neal out there.

As far as players to develop, I would say keep an eye on Brady Ours, have a feeling he is going to be player.

Special teams mimic the success of the offense, and difficulty the D has seen. They do a great job returning the ball (typically) but have a tough time covering kicks.

End of rambling, think there is a lot to look forward to with the team, if the O coaches remain, the future is bright.

The offense had a bunch of players returning from last year. In fact, every single contributor besides the two running backs and Steve Petrick started games last year. It was just a matter of putting them in the right roles with the right scheme.

In contrast, there are like three returning starters on defense. The secondary is two freshmen and two sophomores who didn't play much last year. The defensive line and linebacker groups were gutted by off-season losses. Plus it's a new scheme.

They just don't have the personnel to do what they want on defense. They don't have the personnel to do much of anything on defense. It's going to take time for guys to mature and for some guys to be shown the door and new recruits brought in.
