Long time reader, first time poster.
tyblake I get the Bama analogy but that is an extreme in an realm not the norm. And usually in that extreme an uber talented true frosh starting for a program like Alabama has experience around him. No where to hide last night.
In all my time of following college football I do not believe I have ever seen 4 true freshman start an opener on the offensive line. I do not care what level of football you play/follow/coach things will be difficult starting 4 TRUE freshman on the offensive line.
But lets not stop at the offensive line. I counted 14 TRUE freshman who started or played significantly last night (Fennell, Mundy, Potokar, Rodriguez, Vecchio, Magee, Skuratowicz, Wanat, Stanford, Stanley, Lamica, Lisbon, Smith, and Stott). This of course does not include Madison, who although not technically a true freshman, played his first collegiate game last night. Again, I do not care who you are, it is difficult to win at any level playing that many kids who were playing on Friday nights a year ago. Lets take it a step further and count how many kids were starting a college football game for the first time? How many guys on the field have seen substantial time aside from Branch and the Dline?
My take aways? We are obviously young and banged up. The offense is complex and will take time. Be patient.
Bright spots? There is only one way for the oline to go...up. It may be painful over the next several weeks but it is what it is. We have some speedy backs that can give teams fits. Although we lack height at WR we have some special ones with some speed. We have two very good TE's that can exploit mismatches in Lamica and Green. Once we grow up offensively we can be special. I do not care who the OC is or what offense you run with as much youth as we had on the field last night you are destined to struggle. When we gain experience and depth this offense will be fun to watch.
Defensively our Dline is better than average and I know I'm not telling anyone on here anything new. I also believe Adam Wollett is a heckuva MLB and only a soph. At this point, with the emergence of Stott at CB it would be tough to take Branch away from Safety. Alderson Broaddus exploited us a bit with the deep TE drag/in but that is an adjustment. I really like how all of the DB's hunted and filled with bad intent. And lastly Gee Stanley was special off the edge and in space. He and fellow frosh Stanford impressed me. I believe both somehow slipped through the recruiting cracks.
Patience, patience, patience...
