Anyone watching? Figured I could start a thread. 11 minutes left in the fourth. RMU OL has been bullied around all day. Definitely a young group, but that's not the most encouraging sign. The boys are driving... finish off this series and tie it up!

defense looks great by the way

For those who missed it, matt Barr did not start the game with an injury. if that was posted in here... I missed it! Anyone know what happened? Brumbaugh got the start, then got injured. Andrew Romanchak came in at quarterback. He's been getting more comfortable as the game has gone along... more effective with roll outs IMO. it's a tough situation for a freshman third stringer to come in.

Under 9 remaining: Alderson blocks their second FG of the game. Special teams ball under Banny is for another thread. Too much to say

what a tough game to watch. Much like last couple years. D played good enough to win, O struggled.

The O-line had a tough go, and I get they are young, but still tough night.

Maybe we think of running more, remember one series late, ran twice first down within redzone, then next serious with about 3 minutes, knowing they would go for it on 4th, pass, pass, pass, pass 4 and out. I am not a coach, but does not make sense to me.

Seems to me strength of O is WR, TE, and RB. Oline is young, and QB who knows. I think some true I formation with FB and double tights would help.

D, not much to complain about, as always Farrison has his boys ready to roll.

The offensive line atruggled mightily tonight, as everybody witnessed. If that doesn't change its going to be another long season for these boys unfortunately

The OL was awful last night. RMU will get Blake Chambliss back for Dayton but is that enough? Do you move Mike Lamb back to RT? The OL and the staff has 8 days to get ready because if not, Dayton will eat them alive.
Not sure if Barr or Brumbaugh will be ready for Dayton. So we might see Romanchak back at QB against Dayton.
Offensively, the numbers were awful. But what can you do? Your QB is running for their life on every other pass play. OL not getting a push up front to establish a running game. And while our WRs are very skilled and fast, they are a little short. Our 3 starting WRs were listed at 5'9" or shorter.
For the WRs and staff, I would working hard this week to get UVA transfer Aidan Howard in the mix. More targets to Buss and we have to get Tony Vecchio on the field more.
And all I heard from camp was how special Reggie Green could be but I think he had one target last night.

Putting that all together...lots of film work and practice work needed before Dayton.

Defensively, RMU played like they normally do. Some mistakes but you will have that. Swiss Steve played great as did the DL. ILBs are tough but that middle of the field was open all night and the Battlers took advantage. Too many plays made by their TE over the middle.
Did Branch find a new home at FS? I think so.
Travon Stott..great game for a Fr <- very very early but could make a play for NEC D ROY

Special Teams....ugh
Started great but left 9 pts off the board. I have stated this for 3 years now, let your head coach run the sideline and allow another coach to run special teams. Not that Banny can't be a special teams coach but the head coach needs to be the CEO of this program 24/7. And right now after that bad home opener last night, many folks commented that the program is heading in the wrong direction.

I think mike lamb is going back to center, which will leave you
LT- Rodriguez
LG- Chambliss
C- Mike lamb
RG- potokar or bjuro
RT- fennell

Hopefully something changes for the better for next week

I disagree that it was a massive jump for a couple guys. You watch impact freshman come into big 5 conferences every year and stand out, at schools like Alabama and Ohio state and national powerhouses. So for guys like Max potokar, who came from Saint eds, which was a top 10 team nationally, has the size, and the pedigree, did not expect him to get blown off the ball last night against a small division 2 school in its 3rd year of their program. However, I do agree with the fact that it is unacceptable for a division 1 university to have 4 starters that are freshman on the offensive line. That is not the kids faults, that is on the staff the past few years and the lack of successful recruiting. I understand it's tough to keep kids playing especially when it gets as grueling as it does at this level, but the past 3 years I have followed the program, with the exception of a few guys that have come through and been solid(Blake, max Robertson, faraci, and Jon hill) rarely does this program get lineman that are staples in the program for more than a season. Is that on the o line coach? Is that on the recruiting? I'm not sure, but I do believe that is the bigger issue at hand

Here's my take on the OL talk unless you all understand scheme and at calls and what those boys saw and how they reacted taking pot shots and saying they are not quality athletes is ludicrous. There where 4 freshman that where thinking rather than just executing and when you put your hand on the ground if you have to over think on Gameday it's tough to play. Some of these guys didn't perform well obvious by the continued coaching after every series of Richardson asking "what was your call or what did you see and why did you set that way". Richardson can coach and didn't get bent when the young guys handled situations poorly. He will get these guys into position and ready it may take another game or two.
Let's be honest. Daytona is really good and YSU just crushed Duquesne, the next 2-3 wks may not be pretty.
But they will be battle tested for NEC play which is good.
They will probably make some changes and moving Fennell inside to adjust to the speed of the game could be good. He had moments of greatness and moments he looked out of position. Max let a lot leak inside but had a few shining moments as well. Connor Mundy struggled with slide help and needs to keep his head up for passing off. Rene is light in the ass and it showed.

Blake will help with the soft middle and leadership that Lamb didn't offer last night.

Hey if nothing else they will test our loyalty!!!
Go Colonials!!!

Long time reader, first time poster. ;)

tyblake I get the Bama analogy but that is an extreme in an realm not the norm. And usually in that extreme an uber talented true frosh starting for a program like Alabama has experience around him. No where to hide last night.

In all my time of following college football I do not believe I have ever seen 4 true freshman start an opener on the offensive line. I do not care what level of football you play/follow/coach things will be difficult starting 4 TRUE freshman on the offensive line.

But lets not stop at the offensive line. I counted 14 TRUE freshman who started or played significantly last night (Fennell, Mundy, Potokar, Rodriguez, Vecchio, Magee, Skuratowicz, Wanat, Stanford, Stanley, Lamica, Lisbon, Smith, and Stott). This of course does not include Madison, who although not technically a true freshman, played his first collegiate game last night. Again, I do not care who you are, it is difficult to win at any level playing that many kids who were playing on Friday nights a year ago. Lets take it a step further and count how many kids were starting a college football game for the first time? How many guys on the field have seen substantial time aside from Branch and the Dline?

My take aways? We are obviously young and banged up. The offense is complex and will take time. Be patient.

Bright spots? There is only one way for the oline to go...up. It may be painful over the next several weeks but it is what it is. We have some speedy backs that can give teams fits. Although we lack height at WR we have some special ones with some speed. We have two very good TE's that can exploit mismatches in Lamica and Green. Once we grow up offensively we can be special. I do not care who the OC is or what offense you run with as much youth as we had on the field last night you are destined to struggle. When we gain experience and depth this offense will be fun to watch.

Defensively our Dline is better than average and I know I'm not telling anyone on here anything new. I also believe Adam Wollett is a heckuva MLB and only a soph. At this point, with the emergence of Stott at CB it would be tough to take Branch away from Safety. Alderson Broaddus exploited us a bit with the deep TE drag/in but that is an adjustment. I really like how all of the DB's hunted and filled with bad intent. And lastly Gee Stanley was special off the edge and in space. He and fellow frosh Stanford impressed me. I believe both somehow slipped through the recruiting cracks.

Patience, patience, patience...

I think this group could be special, this team has a lot of talent, certainly at WR and almost everywhere on D.

I think the O line will grow, and as M4Fam said, when some of the older guys come back it will help a lot. I think a lot of these young lineman have lots of potential, and have been put in a position where it is going to be tough to succeed for a while, and that is not their fault. If we had more upperclassmen, they would have more time to develop, and learn the O before being put in, especially all at once.

I was excited about these young Oline guys before the game, and I really still am. They have the pedigree, and from what I have read on here they seem to have a great work ethic and a desire to win.

Also, I am glad to read about Richardson constantly coaching the guys up. They need it, and they need to keep their heads up because things will get better as long as the team stays positive and works hard.

As I mentioned before the game, I was really excited to watch some of the young guys on D also. Stott is legit, Stanley is really good and I think will be an absolute stud. The Penn Traford guys all looked great. D. Smith will be a heck of a player also.

As irish buffalo said, patience is key.

Lets go... Ro Mo

I attended my 1st RMC game to start the season. Atmosphere was energetic not to mention the opening kick-off return. But injuries happen and its always next man up type of philosophy with football...but if the O-Line can't block then nothing will happen on offense as we all know. #77 on the O-Line had an awful day all around. Not sure if he was shocked to get the start or not but I coach football as well so I tend not to follow the ball and watch the trenches. That spot needs to be looked at. QB's running for their life with WR's open in some cases but not able to hit them. QB's footwork was all over the place seems like technique went out the window at the position. The positive I did see on Offense was some good route running on some plays. It came in flashes but you can see it was there. Its a must to build on that. But the O-Line must make a drastic turn-around to survive Dayton. The defense played phenomenal this game. There were some miscues but that was over-shadowed by the overall dynamic play of the defense collectively. #Daytonontheclock

Money I'm sure you were dynamite in your college team's opener as a true frosh. :D

Calling out #77? Slightly bush league. If #77 was a 5th year senior I'd say have at er.

Look, I'm sure Coach Richardson would love to bring these freshman along slowly. Ideally you redshirt them and perhaps get them some quality back-up time as sophomores but the fact is they are the best available right now. Growing pains will occur but I think all 4 that started week one will be a formidable group not too far down the road.

313? First game? WR's were open? My "money" says Madison.

No Money from 313 it is that high level insight, classy analysis of the team, oh wait the OL was your biggest indepth analysis that keeps me now wanting to see what other expertise and perspective you bring from your extensive coaching experiences and ability to focus on the trenches but yet see such fine route running. Looking forward to your next post...

I understand in this PC world we hate to here the clear cut truth but that's all you will get from me and I'll be here the entire season. If someone had a bad game I'm not going to put it on the the entire unit. Go back and watch the film cause a majority of the pressure came from that gap true freshman or not. Putting a hand on someone to slow them up and not touching them at all are two drastic sides of the spectrum. If you're confused its going to happen going live the 1st game but it won't happen the entire game.

M4Fam its not hard to spot open WR 3-4 steps in front of a man. But if your OL in week 1 showed as they did you would never hit them as we all saw was the case. OL and DL carries each team. Not having one of them handicaps a team on either side. I mean I could go through position if you and Irish_Buffalo would like. We can talk about it at a tailgate if you like. I just found out about this thread so here's to a better week 2.
