Games Notes vs YSU

Not sure if it was mentioned, but Huggins is off the roster.

Hope the guys can hang around early and pull the big upset, would be a huge win not just for this season, but for the program.

Interesting. That didn't last long.

Wonder if he thought he'd be a guaranteed starter at this level and wasn't happy with his playing time or if something else happened.

Perhaps more to the story than was previously released. Either way, think it is best for the team.

Great start, then the offense stalled and the defense couldn't get off the field. Special teams was the disappointment, though. Can't give up a punt return TD, plus all that extra yardage.

Jackson is clearly the No. 1 back now, but nice to have Stephens around as a change of pace.

Gonzo and Petrick are a nice combo at tight end. But there's nothing at receiver. I think that needs to be the biggest focus during the bye week. Who can step up at receiver? Some of that falls on Martin, who didn't have a good night and was under pressure every dropback. But guys have to get open and get separation.

Beyond that, this is a huge bye week opportunity. Get guys coached up. Get guys some treatment. Reevaluate personnel and schemes. And then stick with it moving forward. The important games start Oct. 12 in Loretto.

Very curious who will start at QB against SFU.

Also interested to see if DePaul gets time at some point this year with the redshirt rule.

Ysu is a good team, and would have been a huge win, but just not in the cards.

I think they can go AT LEAST .500 in conference with good QB play. OC has some great play development.

Heading into the NEC;
  • We don’t have a clear #1 QB. We have 1A and 1B. Neither are lights out but Lewis is 1-0 and Martin is 0-3. I would like to see Lewis getting the call with SFU!
  • RMU doesn’t have a #1 WR to target 8-10 times a game. Championship teams have those type of playmakers. I don’t think we can just develop someone mid-season. Unless the coaches get some of the younger WRs into the game with potential and see if they can deliver. WR could be a major target in the offseason to land a Juco or FBS transfer.
  • OL is the strength of this team but you can’t be predictable during a game. They will help this team win some NEC games.
  • Defense is getting better which is key. Gray getting hurt against YSU is a concern but he has time to rest. The depth at DL is a concern.
This is a prefect time for a bye week before starting NEC play. I feel that this team is ready to take the right step forward within the NEC. They will shock some teams and feel they could finish within top 3 but do this they have to get the QB and this passing attack going.

Thoughts as of now, let's see what Lewis can do. Understand that Martin is likely the future, but also have to play for now to get W and help recruiting.

Maybe Martin still a little banged up from injury that kept him out of VMI, but Lewis stepped in and played well.

Agree on the receiver. A great, standout WR would do a lot for Gonzo as well.

Also agree they will be extremely competitive in NEC play.

I still prefer Martin, but Lewis was definitely effective last week.

The receiver issues are even more glaring when you consider he caught 30+ passes as a freshman and sophomore.

You're telling me you can't stick him in the slot and run moderate routes with him as another sure-handed option besides Gonzo?

Is there any word on how Brini has been doing? Know he was a big recruit. Maybe the plan is to redshirt him and go with Pettrick and him next year?

Hmmm...trimming some fat within the program? Or bigger issue? Not unusually to have players enter the transfer portal during the season.

Neither one really played much - Parker hasn't played at all, though he certainly had promise. I think the transfer portal has players more conscious of preserving eligibility, too.

Bye week seems like a good time to see who has bought in. Either you're willing to do whatever to stick around or it's time to move on.
