Games Notes: RMU vs. Dayton

Looks like Gabe Luvara is subbing on the coaches show tonight. I'm hoping to be able to listen on the app.

Some notes:

Coach Clark's father indeed passed away on Sunday, so he's been with his family for most of the week. Deepest condolences to him and his family.

The team actually went out and practiced Sunday in an attempt to erase any bad taste from the loss and Luvara really likes the team's mentality. Rod Holder has kind of been running practices in Clark's place while he tends to his family. It sounds like Clark won't be back for Saturday and Holder will coach in his place.

Coach Luvara confirmed that they had zero film on Kentucky State. Said it wasn't an excuse, but it's hard to adjust on the fly, especially to an option offense like that.

He put the blame on his shoulders, said the offense should have been in position to execute better. Turnovers at the goalline were a huge factor and were more flukes than huge mental errors.

As far as personnel, the decision to go to Caleb Lewis was preplanned. They want to keep him engaged and get him some reps. Same with Jordan Johnson. Feels they have three backs in Stephens, Jackson, and Johnson. Johnson has done a lot of short yardage work in spring ball and training camp that the coaches really liked.

Gonzo should play this week, though maybe not every snap. He's practicing, at least.

Mason Gray and Matt Gonzalez are playing like Power 5 players today. The offense is so much more dynamic with Gonzo in the lineup. Martin trusts him a ton.

And Gray is everywhere. He just forced a huge fumble to give RMU a chance to take the lead.

2 straight runs by the Off = big gains
Then let’s get cute and go backwards. Questionable play calling.

Definitely a game RMU was in position to win and should have. Couple defensive mistakes in the second half. Two missed field goals. Questionable play-calling on the final drive.

They still need a sure thing at receiver. Gonzo makes a huge difference, but they need someone outside. I'm guessing Vecchio isn't 100% or something else is going on. I thought I saw him early in the game but not at all later.

Jackson was very good today. I'm assuming Stephens was banged up last week or in practice and that's why he didn't play. They could've used him in a few situations, even as well as Jackson played.

Still, between this and the Buffalo game, RMU looks a lot better than last year, especially if you consider the Kentucky State game a fluke.

Vecchio injured arm diving for a ball on 2nd drive of game. Arm in sling rest of the way. Not sure the extent of injury.

A good game by defense, need better tackling though. First guy to the ball isn’t getting it done enough times!

Special teams had some penalties for extracurriculars and another kick off out of bounds along with missed field goals.

Offense kept their promise of opening it up, like coach promised after last weeks debacle. Stevens may be out for disciplinary reasons or suspension. He is not injured. Good to see Gonzo back. 8 different receivers caught passes. George played good but I saw after game he was all iced up and limping badly.

Totally agree with questionable play calling. Specially with 4 minutes left, get turnover on short field, need to run clock before we, at least tie it up with kick, and we go drop back pass to get ourselves in trouble.

I earlier stated that if nothing else happened this season, I needed to see closer games, deeper into the games and so far so good!
Proud of the young men and staff.

Go RoMo!

Mason likes contact, all secondary needs to be like that.

Gonzo was great, as was Martin.

OL good for a lot of the game.

D needs to get some sacks.

Tried to get to cute at the end O, just jam it down. Only reason I see why calls were what they were is lack of reliable kicker.

Overall, soooo much better than last week. No easy games. Make a couple FGs and it's a different game.

Huge hit by Mason, fumble and we get the ball.
Two runs with big gains. OL taking over the game.

1st down - inc pass on an attempted swallow cross that was well defended.
2nd down - another screen and Jackson slips. -4 on the play.
3rd down - great coverage by Dayton and bad sack by Martin.
4th down - INT but it was 4th and forever and way out of FG range.

Martin was much better. Great 1st half but average 2nd half. 10/21 and less than 100yds in the 2nd half.

Yes much better but still not there. Baby steps I guess.

I sit there and watch the Dayton QB (Cook) escape about 5 or 6 sacks yesterday because he can move his feet. He extended plays and completed passes off of that. I have nothing against George, he is a good pocket passer, but the minute he has to move his feet he becomes very subpar. Jimmy had that side step ability AND he had a very quick release. It is so much harder to defend 11 than 10 (QB that cannot move eliminated). We simply make it easy on a defense in that regard.

The defense is coming around. I've said this before but once they get the right people in and build depth the D will be good. It is a no gimmick defense. They are going to sit in 4-3 quarters coverage and play (think MSU). It is just tough to get there.

Lets get one week better and beat VMI.
