DII that beat FCS in Week 2
Week 2:
Kentucky State (@ Robert Morris) - 13-7
East Stroudsburg (@ Wagner) - 24-14 (FYI: Wagner lost to FBS Connecticut by 3...insert UConn football comment here)
Virginia Union (@ Hampton) - 36-17
Midwestern State (@ Northwestern State) - 33-7
Tarleton State (@ Stephen F. Austin) - 37-26
Truman State (@ Drake) - 10-7
Too close for comfort (within two scores):
Morehouse College (@ Alabama A&M) - 30-35
Indiana Wesleyan (@ Butler) - 27-30 (OT)
Central Washington (@ Idaho) - 31-41
It certainly happens across football.
Everyone remembers when Appalachian State went into the Big House and beat Michigan. People forget that Appalachian State won the I-AA that season and were a really good football team. With transfer rules and scholarship reductions there is FAR more parity today than there used to be. There is a reason why NFL rosters are littered with D3 and D2 guys.
So everyone slapped themselves on the back after the Buffalo game (it now appears Buffalo worked on PSU all camp and probably spent 2 days on RMU) and thought KSU would be a cakewalk? Recipe for trap week.
I heard some disgruntled fans badmouthing the defense on Saturday. The D played well enough for us to win and let me tell you it is tough preparing for an offense like that. I also heard we had zero film. If we can score from 5 yards out the score is 21-14 (at worst) and we eke out a win. I think if we score on those goal line situations it may have snowballed because teams that run option struggle to play from behind.
A couple notes I made from the game...
* Do we have a new exchange program with American Somoa? In all honesty I like the beef. We were able to rotate a bunch of Dlineman all game.
* Brady Ours and Aniello Buzzacco are 185 and 190 respectively. That is giving up some size BUT I watched them all game and they take good steps and play downhill and fast. I was impressed.
* With Gonzo out why leave Dylan Smith in on passing downs spread wide? I think the world of Dylan but he is 6'1 210 whereas Gonzo is 6'3 230 and creates a far bigger mismatch. We left Dylan in the slot on 2x2 and ran a Smash route to his side and he was easily covered. Why not rotate in one of our talented WR's?
* Tim Vecchio has had a nagging injury. I hope it gets better soon.
* George did not play well. I'm sure no one is harder on George than George but why do we recruit some fast QB's and then never use them? I watched the DePaul kid play and he has some wheels. George running designed zone reads looks like a fish out of water. DePaul has a live arm as well. I've never hid the fact that I prefer QB's that can run.
* I get playing Huggins where we can but that is a slap in the face to kids that busted their butt all camp. I get it, it is the day and age we live in, but for the almighty college football dollar we have traded in some values. I believe Huggins left FU after being accused of assaulting a TA? Hey, come to RMU, we are desperate and you can play right away, all forgiven OK?
* Getting kids off the transfer portal is a band-aid. At some point we need to build a program. RMU has not been getting a good return on its investment as of late.
* Speaking to some parents it sounds as if some kids are disgruntled. I will leave it at that. Kind of surprised me as I thought the morale was up under Coach Clark.
* One very boisterous and apparently drunken fan had some knowledge to pass on to Coach Clark and he did not mind the world hearing it. A couple doozies were...
"
Hey Coach Clark, you are getting beaten by a woman's D2 team" - One KSU mom took offense but then shrugged and laughed.
"Hey Coach Clark this is not Miami, you actually have to coach"
Moronic to say the least.
I will swallow this one and see how we perform against Dayton. Hopefully we show up and compete and prove this last week was a fluke but losing to a D2 team that finished 0-10 last season at home is tough to take.
