2018 National Signing Day

Seems as though we are off to a slow start - seven incoming freshmen, and the three previously announced mid-year transfers. Hopefully, there are more to come today.

I don't think it's going to be a big class. There weren't many seniors, and while you can recruit over some kids, I think this staff wants to see what they have this year. They brought in some guys to contribute immediately and now they can kind of keep things open for the rest of the spring. They can always add guys in March and April.

But a couple commits haven't signed yet. Jacob Wilson from Pittsford Central is signing at 3. Jaccari Braddy from Woodbridge VA is committed but hasn't signed yet either.

Hopefully they get some more guys. I am fine with quality over quantity.

If I was new coach, I would want to see what I have, get guys you think are going to be good team guys now. Evaluate in spring and next season leaving some scholly money on the table. Recruit like hell for next year's class.

I mentioned it in another post, but coaching at this level you need to manage your scholarship dollars. If you toss big money at a few guys and they don't end up be studs, can set you back.

Anyhow, the guys signed look great. Couple more would be great, but the difference we need from this coaching staff is to develop the players, particularly qb and oline imho.

Apparently, they are finished for today. I guess the good news is that, apparently, most of the current players are staying at RMU, at lease at this point.

Terence Stephens should be an immediate impact player at RB, but we are awfully thin at that position, so we will need to bring in at least a couple more backs. There are always some FBS players looking to transfer after spring drills, maybe we will pick up a couple more transfers. There is only one OL in the group signed, so I assume we are not losing any our current linemen. The current linemen can be good players after being thrown in under fire as freshmen.

WR seems to be a position that could be very talented for us. What does anyone think - which positions are we still in need of help, and which positions look strong for the Colonials?

Well, Stephens can definitely be a workhorse. He was a bull in high school.

Depending on transfers, you'd also have Derek Albert, Malik Wells and Nolan Burns back. T.J. Neal ran the ball at times, if he's still around. I'm guessing they won't use fullbacks much, so Jonathan Wanat could move over as a bigger tailback.

That's potentially 6 deep at running back, although fairly unproven behind Stephens.

I'm actually not that worried about depth yet as long as transfers don't gut it. There are so many younger players on this team that I'm actually glad they may get a chance to develop and show what they can do.

My biggest concern is always the line. But there's no quick fix there. You gotta develop. So as long as these kids are sticking around, everything else should be ok.

The oline will be vastly improved. There has always been talent but they were young and to make matters worse not coached up. Coach Clark is walking into a situation where he actually has quite a bit of experience on the oline. Scheme will help as well.

Although we all loved Fairson I think our D should be equally as good. I cannot imagine ANY offense being as bad as Mike Miller's. If Coach Luvara's offense resembles what they ran at Albany I'm excited. We have talent, get creative and move the chains. Once these kids buy in look out.

Yeah, I'm not worried about defense at all. Even with some key guys graduating, there's talent and depth there. And Clark/Plungas have had solid defenses at Albany.

Albany's offense wasn't great last year, but sounds like a lot of dissatisfaction was with play-calling by their coordinator. Luvara wasnt involved in that. He developed the QBs and has had a lot of praise from Clark, so hopefully he has a good scheme.

I'm hoping for a lot of 3 WR sets or 2 WR with a TE in the slot and on the line. Clemson and Alabama do this really well at the big boy level and it can lead to a really balanced offense.

Spring can't get here fast enough.

I agree. Utilizing the TE's we have to create mismatches is a pain on defenses. I honestly believe we will see just how bad the Miller offense was. I feel like these kids have been under coached so badly the last few years. It would be nice to see them have some real fun for once.

Completely agree IB. I said a few time I think there is the talent. But not coached up. Football is a coaches game

Its not the X and O's Its the Jimmys and the Joes MUST HAVE GOOD PLAYERS TO WIN MORE THAN THAT PLAYERS WITH A WILL TO WIN NO MATTER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCE THEY MAY FACE

I throughly disagree about the Xs and Os comment. It’s a combination of talented athletes being put in the right places to succeed. Plus it’s an ability to supplement in positions that don’t have superior athletes with athletes committed to the success of the team. Coupled with a scheme that utilizes both groups strengths and hides weaknesses. That’s Coaching!!
Putting that together requires one hell of an ability to see talent, groom football players and put them all in a position to individually succeed. That enables success and again that is what a “successful” coach and staff does. A lot of good coaches aren’t successful.

It’s a combination!

One of the GOAT NFL QBs just lost the Super Bowl after putting up record numbers. Because one of the greatest coaches of all time was out coached! Doug Pederson had a tremendous game plan that for the most part was executed flawlessly by a backup QB.

Rappers delight, while have good players is incredibly important, football, is ultimate team sport.

Without a good coaching staff to develop, game plan, lead, and discipline, the best athletes will win some games, but they need coaching to make them great.

Anthony DelleFemine is a big, strong, athletic WR from Norwin who signed last year. He had an injury during the summer and was unable to join the team. From his tweets, it sounds as though he is eager and ready to go for this coming season. Does anyone know if he is enrolled in school this semester which would allow him to participate in spring drills?

He could be a heck of a player, not to derail this thread, but is the young man from UVA still around that got injured?

I heard recently that Aiden Howard is still at RMU, however, he still has injury issues.

Is that the 3rd kicker? Obviously this staff has found a need to pick up some additional help at DBs and Kickers. Hey we missed some makeable kicks last year. Making sure to be strong on all fronts. I like it
